  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Atticus, gut stasis

How is Atticus these days? Are the protexin still helping?
Idk how I missed this!

He's kinda the same, the protexin pellets seemed to work for a bit, but then he got bad again, he's had another bad episode unfortunately since the last, and was very unwell, now he's better but still just producing really weird smooth cecotrope type things that smell horrendous :( he doesn't seem to be in any discomfort, he's very springy and himself and wants to eat everything ofc.. But he has to be bathed a lot because he often sits in the mess and it gets stuck near his bum, I'm absolutely dreading summer, with fly strike, it may be that he gets a daily bum bath in the summer, which will be the last thing I need but I won't have him in a mess just because of stuff in my life. It's unfortunate I don't have anyone else that can bath, clean or hold him.

Thank you for asking :) x

This is the perfect description for Rudey too. I can't believe a rabbit could produce something that vile smelling - its honestly more like dog poo (in fact the first time it happened I accused OH of walking it in, even though we are shoes off at the door). If you find a miracle cure keep me posted. I'm sorry he's struggling & I can certainly empathise with the prospect of keeping him clean being daunting when you'll have another bum to clean & obviously want clean environment for her

My late Digger needed daily bum baths when he became disabled. He quickly went from fighting me to enjoying his baths .
Atticus is lucky to have you:D
Sending you both some vibes.

Yea it's exactly like that isn't it! Same for you, if you find anything that works let me know, willing to try anything to help him. He's so well in himself day to day it's so hard to know what's going on, if you saw him you'd just think normal bun, other than being too smart for his own good he's just your typical rabbit, but the output is terrible... [emoji51] And the smell.. I mean it's unbearable [emoji51] yea I'm most worried about being in a bad way myself and not being able to give him what he needs cleaning wise. My boyfriend can keep his space and litter tray clean and keep him fed and watered, but if he does need cleaning up its a worry :(

How did you do the bum baths? We use a baby bath and put a little bit of water in the bottom, then he stands on his back legs and rests his front paws on my hand and I use my other hand to clean underneath him, he's very good really. And we just use a little shampoo and then rinse lots of times then towel dry him off, but it takes two of us, my boyfriend empties and refills the bath etc for me, wondering if there's an easier way? This seems to get him clean the quickest but obviously there's a lot of stuff and set up needed and we both have to be there to do it.

Thanks really appreciate that x
