Young Bun
Hey,

One of my buns has recently been diagnosed with EC, she keeps weeing everywhere which is fine, but it’s when she sits in it and strains, can EC cause UTI’s?

Thank you x

Hello

I am sorry to hear that your Bunny is not well. EC can cause urinary incontinence, but a secondary bacterial UTI is also a possibility. Did your Vet run any diagnostics ? What treatment has your Bunny been prescribed ?

Thank you for your reply.

She’s had blood tests, wee sample and a poo sample. All was normal other than the EC test.

She’s currently on panacur and metecam x

The incontinence is probably neurological in origin then- ie she cannot feel when her bladder is full so she will leak wee/wee when picked up/wee in the 'wrong' places and then remaining sitting in it. Apart from the incontinence what other symptoms does she have ?

Are you treating all other in contact Rabbits with a 28 day course of Panacur ? This is necessary.

You have probably already read these :

I’ve not had any experience of this so I can’t advise, but I’m sending lots of vibes to your bunny xx

Yes, makes sense, poor baby!

She just looks like she’s in pain, hunched over sometimes and sitting in the corner, but then she’s ok again and you wouldn’t know there’s anything wrong! She also lost a lot of weight but I’m managing that now, there used to be loads of cecos everywhere, that seems to have stopped now I’ve stopped the greens as I think they were upsetting her.

I have 3 other rabbits and all are being treated.

Thank you, I’ll have a read x

I took her to the vets yesterday as she really wasn’t well, she had gas in her tummy but wasn’t in stasis, I have a feeling she suffers with gas as this has been going on for a while now, can that happen? X

Reduced gut motility can occur when a Bunny is poorly anyway. This, in turn can lead to the accumulation of painful gas. Did the Vet give any further treatment ?

Can rabbits suffer with gas anyway? I have a feeling she’s has it often, about 6 months ago I thought she had a uti, further test and she has EC, but the symptoms of the gas are quite similar to when I thought she had a uti.

She is on lactalose, infacol and metecam (and panacur) x

Lactulose ??

Did the 'gas' start before or after giving that ? Some Rabbit Specialists now say Rabbits should not be given Lactulose (when previously it was recommended ) as apparently it has been found to cause dysbiosis. Is she also having fluid therapy (subcutaneous or IV fluids as well as oral), this is usually necessary when on Lactulose.)

How Rabbit Savvy is your Vet ?

Oh gosh I didn’t know that! I didn’t give her any this morning and have stuck to the infacol, I have been syringe feeding her water with pro-c mixed in just so I know she’s getting fluids. Is it normal for gas to take a while to get rid of? I’m so worried about her :(
How many times can I give infacol a day?

I have a bunny with EC & similar symptoms to your girl. Are you syringe feeding food too? My bunny recently changed vet & that is the plan to help him gain weight - he eats more by himself when he has syringe feeds too.

The jury is out on infracol really. Its designed to help infant with colic burp but since bunnies can't burp or be sick..I believe its pretty harmless though

Vibes for your bunny
