  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Are EC spores airborne?

Hello All,

I’m slightly (a lot) anxious and am hoping for advice and/or reassurance:

I just took Pepper and Bertie to the vets as Pepper had a check-up booked in. As we were waiting in reception to pay, a very distressed woman carrying a cardboard box turned up. The receptionist took the box and disappeared out back for a while. When she came back with the box, she handed it to the woman and told her that the Vet suspects EC.

At first I was very supportive and told the woman to sit down and breathe, but then I had a bit of a panic attack as well, worrying that my buns will catch spores their the air o_O The receptionist said my buns will not have caught anything and I don’t need to give them Panacur (she said she didn’t touch the poorly bun so no cross-contamination of any kind) but I’m still worried. What do you think? Could it happen? I’ve nursed a bun through EC before and it’s not something I want to repeat... xx

EC is passed on via spores excreted in urine, so ingestion of contaminated food/hay is the main route of transmission. Very rarely inhaled spores from urine could potentially lead to cross infection. But this is highly unlikely. It can also be transmitted from Mother to Kits during birth. I'd say that it were 99.9% UNLIKELY that your Rabbits are at risk from the Rabbit in the Surgery today :)
