Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

In and out of stasis

Have you tried tilting her head back a bit and putting it in the side gap just past her two front teeth? Yes it will be better with two, I sometimes stroke Doughnut's throat to try and encourage her to swallow as she also sometimes keeps it in her mouth! You could try putting it in front of her but really water it down so she can lap it up, if her teeth are hurting. So that it's not a paste consistency.

I would say in an hour or so, carry on with the metacam too, they can take both together. Doughnut is now on half a tablet twice a day and she's only 1kg so you should probably get a similar amount. If it is the tablet I cut it in half then crush it between two spoons. Put it in a glass then put the metacam on top (and also the ranitidine she is on), swish it around with the syringe so it dissolves a bit then suck it up into the syringe. You may get the medicine and she was on 0.1ml of that twice a day.

Let me know how you get on.

She's prescribed 1 10mg tramadol twice a day. Does that sound ok?

Eta: she hasn't really eaten all day but I've just gone in to the bedroom and she's sat on the bed with half a mint bush disappearing in to her mouth
I'll wait until her 4pm emeprid and give her the tramadol then.

Yes I think that sounds about right. I'm guessing Doughnut's is 10mg and she is bigger than Doughnut. I really hope it helps, it's the only thing that now helps Doughnut after a dental. She used to come back and start eating straight away but now she doesn't.

Ah it's OK. I normally have to rush Doughnut to the emergency hospital at night after a dental, and she's got metacam and all gut meds at home. Then she goes into the specialists vets during the day where they give her tramadol and an IV and syringe feed her. I now dread dentals which she seems to need every 6 weeks! This weeks it wasn't anywhere near as bad since she is already on gabapentin, metacam and tramadol for her arthritis. She didn't stop eating but she's still wet and not eating hay and losing weight so back to the vets again on Tuesday. Let me know how you get on.

I have to pick her up and syringe feed the tramadol as she doesn't like the taste of that, but in the metacam it isn't too bad :)

Lola generally goes mad for anything out of a syringe. Back when rambo was very ill and needed syringing a lot I'd have to get syringes full of water ready for lola to have at the same time or it would be impossible to get anything in to rambo because lola would be getting in the way trying to steal it

Haha Doughnut used to take her medicine lovely and run over when it was just ranitidine, since I added tramadol that's it, she runs off! Let me know if you notice a difference, hopefully won't be long

She definitely didn't enjoy the emeprid as much with the tramadol but she still took it all so fingers crossed that keeps up!

Now the waiting begins at least you got it into her. Hopefully in an hour or two you will notice a difference

There was a brief period where she was happily munching away and she took some syringe feed but she's back to doing not a lot now. She's had all her meds except the tramadol at 8 so with any luck she'll perk up soon.

She was even more resistant to the syringe feeding when she was being held. Not really sure how to get her to swallow it

Hopefully she'll pick up again after the meds. If she's not ok and hardly eating I would see if they can have her in. Is she drinking? She may start getting dehydrated and they can syringe give her meds and put her on an iv if necessary. After doughnut has been at the vets for the day she normally comes back a lot brighter

107 poops overnight, that's about twice what she did the previous night. Think we'll stick with keeping her at home where she's happier. I just need to stop panicking when she doesn't seem so good in the day time because she always perks up later on.

Eta: she's just had almost 1/5 of the critical care she should have for the day and she ate it quite happily. :D

Glad to hear that she appears to be making some progress now. Sending lots more vibes xx

She's definitely feeling a bit better today. She's had about half of the critical care they suggest for the day and she's been nibbling other things on her own.

150 poos last night :D
However she's all but refusing to take water from me and there wasn't much wee overnight. I've put out two flavours of fruit tea and some plain water for her today in the hopes she drinks something.

I hope she will gradually continue to improve. If she’s having a lot of wet food perhaps she won’t feel like drinking much.

274 poos overnight!
She's still eating next to nothing during the day and it doesn't make sense to me because her meds are either twice a day or more frequent. Nothing is once per day anymore :?

The motility of the cecum is more 'active' at night which makes me wonder if there is an issue with her cecum. That said, could it be that overnight she is not being stressed by being medicated ? Could giving a trial period of 100% 'hands off' for 24 hours be worth a go ? Obviously discuss it all with the Vet, but sometimes stress from lots of handling can mean that the Rabbit refuses to eat. It is really hard to take a step back and do nothing pro-active, but on many occasions I have had anorexic Rabbits return to normal eating just because I have left them alone. As I said, please discuss this with your Vet as it is certainly not always appropriate to adopt a 'hands off' approach.
