  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

In and out of stasis

I really thought it was the best thing for everyone - I thought having some company would be the final step to getting her back to her usual self and bonding them was so easy last time. I feel absolutely terrible on all fronts today. She ate one raspberry leaf last night and that was it.

Having to take some more holiday from work to nip to the vet for more meds and tesco for some mint and coriander. Poor Simon is doing his best not to make me feel worse but he's had enough of our bed being covered in fresh urine day and night.

She was nibbling a bit of parsley when I got home with the new potted herbs. She's back to only eating when I'm not looking. I think it's going to take her a while to forgive me for letting Obi chase her.

She is probably still feeling vulnerable after being poorly and Obi is picking up on that and using it to his advantage to assert his authority. I think you will have a much better chance of getting them back together if you leave it for at least 4-5 weeks. Maybe try in the New Year. The last thing you want to add to your stress is a bonding mishap over Christmas.

Yes we'll definitely leave it until the new year now but once she's eating I may try putting her in a pen in the lounge for an hour or so in the evenings if she seems alright with it.
For now I've sorted out the spare room, put hay trays and water in every location and opened up all the doors so she can go wherever she is happiest. That appears to be the spare room this afternoon.

It's such a shame you can't just have a word with them. Initially Obi did pull fur which made her scared, but after the first 15 minutes he was only going for her when she ran away from him. When she stayed still he'd just flop over and chill out. He seemed in a fabulous mood this morning - binkying all over the place when I went in - think he enjoyed the bunny company last night

Lola is down at the vet for x rays, a thorough dental exam while she's under and repeat blood tests today after the worst bout of stasis since this all began.

On a selfish note I had a much needed night away booked which we can't go on. Simon and I have used the holiday time with work so we can't even go another time and so far today has just been moping about and occasionally crying. I'd actually rather be in work today, at least I'd have something to take my mind off this.

Hopefully we get some answers because the wee beastie can't keep going like she has been. I feel so useless.

Well that is one thing you are most definitely not !

I am sorry that Lola has relapsed again and I really hope that the Vet can ascertain the primary cause of all her problems. Sending lots of vibes for her xx

I’m so sorry:cry: I hope the vet can get to the bottom of it. you certainly aren’t useless. Sending lots of vibes and hugs xx

She has spondylosis and her teeth were bad again.
New blood test and x rays ruled out kidney problems so she's back on the metacam

I don't know where to go from here. Of all the rabbits I've had she is the most affectionate and sweet and needy, I don't know if it's fair to keep her alive if she can't have a friend.

I think she should improve now she's back on Metacam. Is the Rabbit you had planned to bond her with very exuberant ? She may be able to cope with bonding with a gentle submissive Bunny once her pain is under control.

He's young but as a giant he's pretty lazy and easy going. She herself still whizzes round the place like a young bun (except on these days where she's very down). It really shocked me that they said she has spine problems because she's so active and always up and down from the bed.

I'm going to give bonding them one more try in the new year and then look at getting a friend for each of them. They seemed so good together before, its such a shame that it was so soon after they were bonded that her problems started.

I hope the metacam helps her, sending lots more vibes. I hope that the bonding will work xx

When Endeavour's early onset arthritis was diagnosed his only presenting symptom was episodes of gut stasis. He did not have any obvious signs of mobility problems.

It will be important that your Giant Bun does not get humpy with her during bonding given that he is obviously a very large Rabbit. The weight on her back would be extremely painful due to her spinal problems. Has the Vet mentioned any additional treatment such as acupuncture and/or laser therapy ?

The vet didn't mention anything else but I could take her back to the specialist.

Last time we tried to bond them obi pulled some fur but no humping. We've had a gridded barrier up and they've been spending time together through that but it's not secure enough for me to leave them unattended. I might try and sort out something more secure so they'll at least have company of some sort when I'm not about.

Are they indoor or outdoor Rabbits ? Sorry if you've already explained their set up. It's just that I'll get my thinking hat on as to what you could do to make a secure side-by-side set up for them and it'd help to know what their set-up currently is :)

They're house rabbits. They were free range but now he has the lounge and she has everywhere else. I'm looking at buying a door I can potentially ruin so that I can cut a piece out and staple on some wire mesh!

He is a real escape artist. He can climb fencing and is completely fearless of drops

What about an extra tall Pet Gate. They are a bit pricey though, but you might find one to bid on on Ebay.

Not sure if you can see this:

After that he also learned to scale without a corner. The fence was almost as tall as me (5ft!) in the end

I'm ordering a 90cm dog fence with gate now. It's all upright slats so hopefully nothing for him to be able to climb up on and it's got stablising legs so he shouldn't be able to topple it over.
