Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Acute kidney disease - u/d bloods ok!

Sorry to just drop in again when things go wrong. Does anyone have any information on acute kidney disease? Honey has had a terrible week. She stopped eating on Tuesday morning, but it was different from her usual episodes. As usual I got her straight to my vet, who couldn’t get her pain under control so referred her to D1ck vet Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday they found her blood levels for her kidneys were too high, about 3-4 times too high! They done an ultrasound and a ct, which should no problems with her kidneys so they are saying she has acute kidney failure.

They have had her on double fluids and repeated the blood test yesterday which showed everything on the higher end of normal. The plan is to wean her off fluids over the weekend and repeat the blood test on Monday, and again about a week later if it is still ok.

Does anyone know what could cause acute kidney disease, and can rabbits kidneys return to properly functioning afterwards?

Honey has so many other problems, including spondylosis of the lumbar and thoracic spine, nodules in her lungs, an abscess in her mandible, constant snuffles, and a urine infection which they say is unrelated to the kidney disease.

She is under Specialist care and I am sure the Vets will do all they can for her xx

I don’t have any experience of this in rabbits so I can’t advise but I’m sending lots of vibes xx

Thank you both. I’ll read the links Jane, thank you.

The vet says Honey is much happier now and they will stop her syringe feeds sometime today.

Poor girl.

Not acute, but Pandora has had chronic kidney insufficiency for years. It was probably caused by EC. The biggest sign was high levels of calcium in her blood because her kidneys couldn't flush it out quickly enough. A low calcium diet followed, now thrown out of the window with her latest issues.

I wish her the best.

Honey is still doing well. They’ll keep her on half level fluids today and stop them this evening and repeat the blood test tomorrow morning.

Hopefully if that’s ok she’ll get home tomorrow, but will need her bloods repeated at the end of the week.

Glad to hear that she is doing OK at the moment and I do hope that things will not deteriorate when fluids are stopped. Sending lots more vibes xx

well done Honey. She is quite the little fighter isn't she. I hope she is home & well soon

Thank you both. I’m so worried about tomorrow, and the next blood test if this one is ok. She will only be off fluids for a few hours when they do the test tomorrow, so I’m wondering if the test will be ok.

I’ve been worrying about her all week so much that I’m feeling ill now, which I’m sure you will all understand.
