Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Rudey has kidney issues :(

joey&boo

Wise Old Thumper
Rudey was at Crab Lane today. He was last there 5 weeks ago. He has gained a little weight (130g) but this has taken some doing - to put it in to perspective his missus Mousey has gained 3 x that much.

He had bloods done & the values for his creatine & urea were elevated, not massively but indicative of some renal dysfunction. his calcium was slightly raised too. I've to keep trying to fatten his up whilst making sure his diet isn't too calcium heavy. Back in 6 weeks for more bloods & urinalysis. She did say xrays are useful but I personally wouldn't opt for that unless it was for treatment rather than diagnostics.
Vet described his condition as chronic .

He was at least deemed ok for Filavac which she wasn't keen on giving him last visit. He was also complimented on his sweet & calm nature

My poor little man.

Oh - poor Rudey. Such a special and unique bunny who has melted a few hearts on here. I know he is in safe hands with you and you will do everything you can for Rudey.
Sending millions of vibes for such a gorgeous rabbit - Rudey. xx

so sorry to hear about Rudey, he couldn't be in safer hands. Lots of vibes for your lovely boy, really hope he goes on ok xx

Oh no, I'm sorry J&B [emoji17] I know what a kick in the guts that diagnosis can be. If it's any consolation, Fudgie's kidney disease is also chronic but she's so full of beans I sometimes forget she has it. It's hard at first, but the only thing you can do from a psychological point of view is to try and live in the moment with them. If they're happy and seem well in themselves then all is good. They don't know they have something wrong with them. That's the burden we have to carry.

Oh man :( I am so sorry. At least Rudey has such bunderful life with you and Mouseypie. He is living the bunny dream. I think the most important thing with bunnies is that they are happy then they cope better with health issues. Rudey lad is very happy xxx

Thanks for all your kind words xx

TBH I don't understand much of what it means but I know its not good. OH's understanding of the consult is way different from mine - he has no idea what this might mean for Rudey. He described his results as inconclusive & thinks his prognosis could go "anyway"

I had it in my head that blood tests don't show kidney disease til its progressed quite far. From one of the above links it says urea isn't raised til 50-70% kidney function lost. We haven't discussed pain relief - I know he can't have metacam, what are his other options- does anyone know.

If he had a urine infection & that was successfully treated would his kidney function improve or just have the potential not to get worse?

Sorry for all the questions

Hi J&B, from what I remember from my conversation with the specialist, I'm sure he said that blood tests weren't that reliable when testing for kidney disease. I may well have misunderstood or heard that wrong. Hopefully Jane will be along soon as she'll be far more knowledgeable than me.

I did specifically ask about metacam. He said it was fine for short periods (e.g for a few days to get them through a stasis episode) but if they needed long term pain relief they would put them on gabapentin. I've never used that so I don't know if that comes with its own set of side issues.

Sorry, I've had absolutely no experience of this, either in rabbits or humans. I've also not read the links, so my thoughts might be pure bunkum.

I would not have thought that a UTI would produce the blood results that you have got and so I doubt whether it would make any difference. If you're thinking that maybe Rudey has a UTI at the moment, I would have thought that the vet would be considering abx.

I'm wondering if your OH might have understood from the consult that the results atm are considered inconclusive and that's why the vet wants to repeat them and hasn't immediately put Rudey on medication.

Sending the shiny lad lots of vibes.

Thanks Scrappy, thats good info. I reckon the kidney tests might be unreliable as things need to be quite far advanced to show up? not sure though. Never had a bun on gabapentin but heard scary stuff on here. My vet is off til Thurs - I need to call her back then so this is useful prep time about things to ask her xx

Thanks Omi. He may need to go on abx - he hasn't had a urine test yet.It will be interesting to know if UTI could impact on bloods - if he has a UTI he has had it for a long, long time.

Not sure why he wasn't tested at crab lane but she called on our way home to ask if I could get local vet to do a dip stick urine test (checking for sediment & specific gravity. I assume they would naturally check for infection too???) I called local vet to ask if they could help this morning . Queried how "fresh" the sample needs to be & the receptionist advised I get the first sample of the morning !!! as it will be strongest :lol: because all rabbits I've known took themselves up in bed at midnight & cross their legs til their 7am alarm? I mean even if it were true (?) when is first thing in the morning for rabbits

Sounds like nonsense to me :) Tui certainly doesn't practise this behaviour :)

Sad to read your news about Rudey :( but at least now you know you can get it treated as if I remember rightly you’ve been wondering about him for a while. Sending lots of love x
