Update Doughnut has arthritis of the spine - laser treatment

Thanks everyone for your lovely posts. Sorry I haven't updated been really hectic as started new job and weekend manic too. I've picked her up and she was dry but a few hours later she was wet again! On Saturday I called the vets and they said to up the dose so she's now on 1/4 tablet of gabapentin twice a day and 1/2 tablet tramadol twice a day, so total 1 and a half tablets a day. She seems to be dry a few hours after the meds but then is wet again. She also relaxes a bit but then doesn't. She's happy and following me around for food although still not eating hay. I'm seeing my specialist Mark tomorrow evening so thinking she may need to up the meds again to keep her dry and pain free. I will update on Wednesday.

Has anyone else had this when they are dry but then wet again? I can't give 3 lots a day as I'm at work!

I'm pleased to hear that your girl is back home again, and seems happy. Sorry I've no experience to be able to offer any advice, but I'm sure someone will. Good luck when you see Mark, hope he can help. Sending loads more vibes for beautiful Doughnut xx

Sometimes the initial dosing needs to be high (loading dose) and it can then be titrated down to a maintenance dose. Maybe she will need to be hospitalised for a few more days to get her stable on a maintenance dose, as obviously you cant not go to work. Sending lots more vibes for Miss D xx

Sorry to hear Doughnut's not quite back to herself yet. :( Sending more vibes your way.

I'm glad you'll be seeing Mark. He'll soon get to the bottom of this (no pun intended.) ;)

I empathize with you on the desire to be with your beloved pet and yet needing to pay the bills. I struggle with this on a daily basis, especially when Jenna seems off before I leave. I think my bunnies were very much confused when I began working again. Up till then we'd spent all our time together and it made it doubly hard to catch the beginnings of illnesses with them.

I hope a solution presents easily for our lovely little lady. (((((((((((((Huge hugs))))))))))))) xxxx

I saw mark. He's added metacam in twice a day again and I need to call Thursday to let him know how she is. If she's dry and better he said I may be able to take out the gabapentin. But we'll wait and see

This sounds pretty good. Vibes that your beautiful wee girlie stays dry & comfortable xx

This is sounding more positive. I reckon Miss D was just wanting to make sure she got to see her man ;) Sending lots more vibes xx

Haha yes there is always a cuddle with the appointment. She was dry this morning but wet again now. Still not relaxing but I think it may take a time for the tramadol to work totally as he asked when I had upped the dose and I said Saturday. She does sometimes get into the loaf position but that's the most relaxed she gets. I'll give her a little clean with warm water and then dry her off with the hairdryer on a low temperature and then barrier cream. Her tail isn't actually soaking wet it's just underneath it and the backs of her legs, so better than when she had myxi!

Thank you. She is still wet so going to see Mark again on Tuesday. I called today to pass the message on she is still wet and not a comfortable stance but don't think I will be getting a call back. She is happy but still not eating hay and not rushing for pellets although when I mashed them up she ate a lot more. Thinking maybe teeth again. Hoping not though as she deteriorates so much now when she has them done.

Oh bless her, it does sound as though her teeth may be an issue again doesn't it  Sending lots more vibes for your precious girl

Adding my vibes also for lovely Doughnut. ((((((((((((((((((Vibes)))))))))))))))))) Jenna just had a dental that had me very worried for her. Luckily she came through it well but as our pets age these things get more complicated. I feel for you both and hope that this next visit will present with a solution that's a little more manageable. (((((((((((((Huge hugs))))))))))))) xxxxxxx

Over the weekend she was wet but still really active and wanting nose rubs and kisses. She's had a lovely bum bath with small animal shampoo yesterday and dried thoroughly and doesn't appear to be wet since although when I get home from work she probably will be! Still not eating hay or rushing for the pellets, she would rather be kissed than eat! Also her stance isn't relaxed, still the loaf position is the most relaxed she is. So strange as I think she is pain free as chasing me around and begging, for what I don't know as I then hand feed her pellets that she hasn't eaten and she eats them. Anyway hopefully Mark can give me some insight tomorrow although he says she leads us a merry dance :)

She's still dry! I think the tramadol needs to build up a bit for her as when she was wet with myxi two weeks later after first taking tramadol she was dry. I'm sure it takes her out of pain and hour or so later but she gets more relief after being on it longer. Her stance still isn't any better and not rushing for food but following me around. I'll update tomorrow!

Still sending lots of vibes, I hope that she has a 'dry' day today. Some of my severely arthritic Rabbits have benefited greatly from Acupuncture. Those who could not tolerate that (they got too stressed) really benefited from massages.

Also, not sure what flooring Doughnut has access to, but arthritic Bunnies find it more painful to hop on lino/hard floors as there is not much traction. Putting rugs down for Bunny to hop on can help.

Are her hocks OK ? Sore hocks can be a secondary problem in arthritic Bunnies as can gunky ears. But I am sure Mark has explained all about that.
