Update Doughnut has arthritis of the spine - laser treatment

Ah so it was an Anabolic Steroid as opposed to a Corticosteroid :) That makes sense now, thanks !!

How is Miss D this morning ?

I am so very happy to see that Doughnut is sleeping more comfortably. That is awesome news!

Jane, I don't mean to derail this thread but, can you explain for me why the type of steroid is important? Does one work better than the other or is it just a practitioner's choice depending on other medications used? I'm just curious because Jenna is on corticosteroids and I wonder if anabolic ones would work better for her with less side effects? Perhaps one is better for appetite stimulation than the other? (I'm trying to remember what kind they put me on while under chemo.)

Sorry to ask this here.

I'm pretty sure the anabolic stimulates the appetite. That's what doughnut was given. The other helps as an anti inflammatory as that's what I have for my arthritis
Lots of small poops so can tell she's not eating hay yet. Mashed her pellets up and she was eating them so she is hungry. Hoping in a few days the hay will be pounced upon!

Well got home last night and she was wet again! Later on in the evening she was relaxing though, all stretched out so I'm very confused. This morning she was dryer but not totally dry and still not eating hay. She eats pellets but eats more of them if I mash them up so doing that with some of them and gave her some basil and coriander, but she seems to be eating a little awkward still. I guess it's early days and I'm impatient but because she's had one thing after another I just want her back to normal. She's still happy though so that's the main thing.

It may be that her severe spinal problems means that there is some compression on the nerves that effect her ability to feel when her bladder is full. So she may have episodes of incontinence as she cant feel when she needs to wee and 'leaks'.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but I am assuming that bladder sludge has been ruled out ?

I don't think so, it hasn't been mentioned. She's had bloods and xrays done and her kidneys are good apparently.

It's not bad, just part of her tail and the back part around the tail, but I would obviously be pleased for her to be dry and comfortable since I know she can be dry.

lots of vibes for your girlie. Rudey hasn't picked up significantly on his steroid injection, I hope Doughnut has? xx

It's hard to tell since she is on so much pain relief, it may be that she is out of pain so eating but her eating wasn't really a problem only that she won't eat hay and she's lost weight after being constantly ill. How is Rudey now?

When was her last blood test ? I am wondering if Mark may want to check her kidney and liver function ?

At least Doughnut seems to be reasonably bright within herself and of course she knows she has 'her man' to help her

Her bloods were done about two months ago when she had myxi and then about 3 weeks ago when she was diagnosed with arthritis. She had been wet both times she had them done.

Yes hopefully he will give me some more insight into it all. He said considering all what she's been through and how ill she's been it's amazing she's made it to this age, I said yes but I want her to live at least another few years, no pressure!

Well she's soaking wet again but is very hungry so the injection has definitely kicked in. Won't eat hay so had lots of pellets as I want her to put on weight. So today and tomorrow I'll keep feeding her then hopefully after that she will eat hay! Disappointed she's wet though

Saw specialist again and have upped her meds. More tramadol and more metacam. I'm to call in a week and see him in two. He'll probably give her another steriod injection but it's too early for another one yet. He said to try cutting the hay up into small pieces to see if she'll eat it like that

Sorry I'm guessing you've already tried, but will she eat readigrass?

Sorry that Doughnut is struggling with hay, this sounds just like Treacle, before dental and after dentals. I'm now mixing a pinch of organic rolled oats in with her morning nuggets, I call it her porridge :D she has managed to put on a little bit of weight.

No she won't eat that but thanks for the suggestion
Will she eat alfalfa? That's like crack to my lot [emoji38]

Does she like fresh grass?

Really hope her increased medication helps her x

I believe she won't eat grass (just dandelions) & no alfalfa either

Have you tried her on these

I am guessing that Mark will want to be mindful of her renal function given all the drugs she is on, so alfalfa hay (too much calcium) and readigrass (too much protein) may be best avoided.
