  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Going to lose my bunny soon

Bindi

Warren Scout
Poor Pandora has had it rough... She's had EC related kidney insufficiency for some years, as well as a constant nasal infection (which turned out to be klebsiella pneumoniae). She lost her partner last year and started acting crazy towards her bonds/later (now ex-) husbun Bailey, attacking with savage intent whenever a water bowl was involved. More recently, after I suspected arthritis, she was diagnosed with narrowing of two of the vertebral spaces (L5-L7). At the end of August she became my longest lived bunny, overtaking Bandit (8 years 11 months). She had her 9th birthday on September 3rd.

Last week I noticed a big change- she didn't want to move around that much, was breathing noisily and turned her nose up even at a bit of strawberry. I took her to the vets and they said she had a chest infection. When that continued with slow progress she was put on depocillin as well as baytril. When she was seen today, the vet was concerned about how fast she was breathing, coupled with her picky eating still. She was admitted for conscious xrays.

When your vet phones and says "Can you come in now to discuss the results?" you know that the sinking feeling you've had all week was bang on the money.

It's cardiomegaly. The heart is so large she can't breathe or eat properly  I'm devastated.

I had been steeling myself to have her pts if the results came back badly, but standing in the vet room crying and snotty I couldn't bring myself to do it. She's going onto some meds to help reduce the fluid and currently she's outdoors in the garden where she likes being (the weather is terrible, but I've covered the enclosure over even if I get wet...)

I'm silently hoping she'll go peacefully by herself in the night one day but I think more than likely, especially depending on if the meds help or not, I'll be helping her over the bridge some time soon. :(

Oh I am sorry  The meds she has now been put on will probably include a diuretic such as Furosemide. This can have a very rapid positive effect on symptoms and make the Bunny feel a lot more comfortable. I am sure that you will do whatever is in Pandora's best interests and that she can remain as comfortable as possible for as long as possible x

Yes, she's been given that and has a review tomorrow morning.

It seems to be the season at the moment, I keep hearing of people who have lost their pets this month, for no apparent September related reason. Poor Bailey is also in the wars- he went for a dental and it turns out his teeth are horrendous (they did x-rays) and one of his molars is infected so he needs a referral to a specialist to have it taken out, probably through his cheek. You wouldn't know there was anything wrong with his mouth, he eats like a horse.

So sorry, I hope the meds can keep Pandora well for as long as possible. Lots of vibes being sent. Also lots of vibes for Bailey and his teeth, hope all goes well for him xxx

Very sorry to read this. Sending loads of vibes for Pandora. I hope the meds help her become more comfortable.

Thanks all. If I could be ill for them, I would, but they are neither of them young rabbits. She's been sitting pretty immobile (not entirely unhappily, just staying) and helping me compile a list of foods that are "yes" "no" and "it's been on the ground for five seconds, I don't want it any more". Last time I let her out in the garden she didn't perk up until it was time to go to bed, at which point she was roaming around in the fading light with considerable interest so I had to stand around a bit longer.

Thanks all. Yesterday her resp. rate was 120 and it was 100 at the vets earlier. They said that because she'd be stressed at the vets she'd be breathing quicker anyway, so they wanted me to take a daily resp. rate at home for proper resting figures. I had a go when I got home from work. The bad news is I couldn't get a good count. The good news is I couldn't get a good count. She kept turning around to eyeball me suspiciously, decided something was up and left. I think it was around 60

Sending lots of vibes and hoping they will feel more comfortable xxx

I hope your Bunny remains as comfortable as possible for as long as possible. When checking respiratory rate just count breaths for 15 seconds and times it by 4. Also, note how much respiratory effort is made whilst breathing. Sending lots of vibes xx

Thanks for vibes all.

I've found counting breaths difficult. Her moving is one thing, and her breaths go shallow and frequent when she eats because she obviously can't do both at the same time, but unlike taking a pulse where you watch the clock and count the bumps, trying to count breaths and watch the clock means that apparently you need eyes like a chameleon. I've about taken the view that if I can say "hippopotamus" between breaths we are doing ok.

Bailey has had his op- turned out he somehow fractured a molar (???!!!) both horizontally and vertically, which got infected. The vet removed it and thinks the root is healthy enough for regrowth.
