Bunny after nephrectomy is not eating

Vvovere

New Kit
Hi, I really don't know what to do, my precious baby, my bunny of 4,5 years old had nephrectomy because of the kidney stones. Vet said operation went really well, he woke up from anesthesia as planned. But he doesn't eat, everyday we go to vet where he receives critical care, pain relief meds, meds to get his git moving (Metoclopramide as I managed to read in this forum it has some bad some good reviews, but thats all could our vet offer as some of the medicine for rabbit is unavailable), but he's just refusing to eat. No pellets, no fresh veggies, no fruits, no hay, no fresh grass, nothings...I'm afraid I'm loosing my bunny. He moves around and he has quite a character, so he fights when trying to feed him, it's almost always brings me to tears as he just breaks syringes. He has power to fight but no wish to eat....I've cried out all of my tears for my baby bunny. I just don't know how else can I help him, vet is the best in our country working with rabbits and tries to do everything in his power. On one side I want to do everything to help him live, but on the other side I don't want to stress him out and make his last days worse if it's the way it's gonna be.....I'm just loosing it and don't know what to do. :(

Hello

I am sorry to hear that your Bunny is not doing too well post nephrectomy. Is he receiving fluid therapy (fluids administered intravenously) ? I think this would be an essential. Also, is a medication called Ranitidine (AKA Zantac) available in your country ?. Ranitidine is a medication that protects the stomach from ulceration which can occur if Bunny is not eating and stomach ulceration is also a side effect of some analgesics eg Meloxicam. Do you know the name of the pain relief Medication your Bunny is having ? Ranitidine also has prokinetic effects on the lower GI tract-ie it increases the motility of the GI tract. It can be beneficial to be given alongside Metoclopramide, which works on the upper GI tract.

Yes Ranitidinum N100 available, I will ask my vet today what dose usage we should try. I will ask the name of the pain medication. He's receiving fluids under skin, but we talked that he'll probably need intravenously.

Yes, IV fluids may be more beneficial than subcutaneous fluids given his very debilitated state. Giving medication IV may be preferable too. I really hope your Bunny can recover x

Again vet looked the stomach, it looks good, not dry. Urine sample gives good results after operation, blood test also gives truly better results than before the operation. We are on Ranitidum from this evening, we'll see how we are gonna go from there. Next week we have scheduled echoscopy 10day after operation and blood test again.

Things are sounding a little more positive and I hope this continues x

Sending you and your bunny some positive vibes. Your bunny may just need a little more time and supportive care to recover from his operation.
Your post brought back some memories because I had a bunny who would almost bite the tip of the syringe completely off when I gave him critical care.

Oh yes, mine bit it off, I was scared he will choke, but he spat it out. It's stress for me and my husband and the bunny to feed him, because he fights as hard as he cans against something he doesn't like. And he doesn't like syringes, but he won't eat critical care by himself. But when I finally manage to put some critical care in his mouth, he chews it like it's a treat. It's all about drama with our little pumpkin.

Thank you, yesterday evening after having some Ranigast (ranitinide) he ate carrot and some herbs. I was over the moon, but he didn't poop much during night...this morning he also ate a bit of carrot and some grass, but poops are not showing. So it's the main issue now. As soon as poops will show he should get back his appetite..

Update: he's interested in food today, eating small amounts but frequently, and gives poop! I'm feeling hopeful :) probably ranigast moved things for better

This is so nerve wrecking :( bunny haven't eaten through night and didn't poop. He started to receive Fibreplex yesterday instead of Biolapis, as bio lapis didn't really deliver any changes. He pooped so well yesterday evening I was so happy, and then it is this again...he tried few pellets during the day, but not particularly interested.

It can be very stressful to nurse an ill bunny back to health. It is not uncommon for stasis/anorexic bunnies to roller coaster up and down before they make a recovery.
Sending you both some positive vibes.

Thank you, he's eating more now but not as much as he ate before, and is more active, but still not usual self. His poops are bigger, but I'm worried about their shape, their a bit oval and I've googled it can be a condition - megacolon. But he never showed symptoms before, can it be postoperational? am I worried to much? is this normal poop? maybe it can be from medicine? Our vets are not that exprienced and we do not have many of them who specialises in rabbits. I'm so scared for my baby, I want to make right decisions for him and always questioning myself have I done enough... and it doesn't seem like anyone understands me "it's just a rabbit' they say.
