Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sulfatrim dose / rabbit gone off food

Got up and she was still in bed sulking - she's used her litter tray overnight, some poo but they're smaller than yesterday and she's had a wee. No signs of having eaten anything.
Just hand fed her 2 sprigs of parsley then she refused anymore but accepted quite a bit of hay being hand fed to her. She did nip me though.
I've just made her get out of bed to get her moving and she's done a lap of the room and now lay in middle of the floor.
She's now grinding her teeth infrequently 😞
I've still got some meloxaid left from a couple of weeks ago - would it be safe to give her a bit or would it have gone out of date?

As Meloxaid is a Prescription only Drug I am legally not qualified to advise you to administer i
t. You will have to make the decision yourself. What I will say is that if I were in the exact same situation with one of my Rabbits I would give the pain killer to my Rabbit.....................................

I've given her the dosage that she was prescribed last time (0.77ml) and will see if that helps today...

The vet that has been treating her ear is off until thurs, it was a different one yesterday, but I'm gonna see if I can speak to any other vets at other practises over the phone today... I really don't want to keep taking her back to the vets as I feel like the stress is making everything worse :(

Thanks for the advice and support as ever.

Really not doing well, home from work and she's not moved all day and hasn't eaten or used her litter tray :(
Waiting for vet to phone me and have an app booked for tomorrow morning.

I really hope that the Vet You see tomorrow will be more proactive with regards to the importance of pain relief. You are doing all you can for your Rabbit, but so far the Vets seem to be falling short on Rabbit specific knowledge.

I just don't know what to do anymore. I've hand fed her some more hay just now. She won't eat voluntarily.
I'm hoping the vet will call me soon I was promised they would after the practise closes but that was half hour ago. I want to go through every single thing that's happened in the last 5 weeks and tackle this properly for her - and I'll stress that she needs pain relief especially with how she was behaving this morning.
I'm completely exhausted by it all and vet bills have amounted to £700 in the last 5 weeks so I'm rapidly running out of funds too, a good chunk of which have just been on the consultation fee let alone the medication and treatments and procedures.

Okay slight improvement - came back to see her and she was out of bed. Wouldn't take any veggies off me though. Managed to syringe feed her another dose of meloxaid without too much trouble and also got a small amount of critical care into her - didn't want to try too much and stress her out. Vet gave me a different brand yesterday as I complained that the last one she seemed to hate (it was aniseed scented and this one smells sweeter).
Fingers crossed.

I spoke to vet on phone earlier and they said they don't think they have the expertise to deal with her appropriately and have recommended an exotics specialist which is 30 miles away. She also said I might need to start considering her quality of life and age (7) which was horrid to hear.

dear miss_rosieannie,--clear off the calendar and go-,,do not despare,-they should have already set it up..instead of reading her last rights...gather all transcrpts,info--call the exotic dvm.-discuss the problem--rabbits do not wait.!!--I have dealt with vets that will drain your pocket book, and we run the risk of losing our loved ones..sincerely james waller from across the greatpond-usa

Thank you - another improvement, just been woken by the sound of her out of bed and chewing at the carpet (I seem to remember chewing cardboard/carpet etc is a sign of something but can't remember what?), have put her veggies in front of her and she's now eaten a bit of those on her own! Going to give more painkiller in the morning along with critical care and speak to exotic vet on phone as you say.
The pain relief and/or stopping the antibiotics seems to be having a positive impact!
Feeling a little more hopeful than yesterday now.

It makes me so cross when some Vets refuse to give pain relief to a Rabbit when said Rabbit has a condition that IS PAINFUL !!

Clearly the Vet you saw has never had an ear infection

It must have made the situation even more stressful for you too.

Do make sure she has food in her tummy before giving her any more Meloxaiad. If at all possible I would try to get her seen by an Exotics Specialist, no point in paying out even more money to a Vet who has already admitted they do not have enough experience to treat her adequately . Shame they took so long (and £700) to mention that fact...............

And to be alluding to Euthanasia at this stage seems very inappropriate and been very upsetting to hear.

How is Bunny this morning xx

So she's lost around 10% body weight. The vet have kept her there overnight to give her meds and fluids and get everything moving, and also do blood tests to rule out any kidney or liver issues.
She also said theres a number of other antibiotics that could be used for her ear infection, they're just not licensed for rabbits but still would be fine.
She was happy I'd given her the meloxicam but said she could take double the dosage for her weight. She sounded super knowledgeable.
I feel awful as I didn't realise they would keep her in and I didn't pack any of her things for her :(
Going to ring before they close to check she's settled ok and they're gonna ring me tomorrow with an update.
Thanks for all the support - I do wish I'd gone to this vets sooner but had never heard of them before.
It's been horrendous to be honest and last night the phone convo was incredibly upsetting.
Noted re food and meloxicam thank you Jacks-Jane - will remember that for the future.
Difficult when you have to resort to diagnosing bunnies yourself isnt it :(

You have done brilliantly in making sure your Bunny gets the treatment she needs. I hope that you will receive a positive update from the Vet later xx

Thank you so much x

I rang to check to see how she was settling in and they said she's eaten a bit of the hay they've given so that's a good sign for me that she's not too over stressed there.

I'll post an update when I hear from them tomorrow x
