The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Suspected URTI advice please

So, we're just back. I saw a different vet today, another locum. He was very thorough with the examination, checked ears, teeth, tummy, chest and temperature. Everything still seems fine.

He said I could have the option of continuing with the baytril to give it a bit longer to work or we can go ahead and do CT scans. I asked to go ahead with the scans and he's doing two referrals: one to the RVC and one to the local animal hospital, just so I have the option of choosing one of the two. I'm going to go with the RVC. It is a bit further to travel but I want the top brass on the case.

Just to manage my expectations, he did say there was no guarantee the scan will give a definitive answer as to why she's sneezing so much. I'm ok with that, just for my own peace of mind I need to know I've explored every possible avenue.

Ah good luck. It's hard when it's a mystery and you're doing everything you can. I hope you get some answers.

Thank you.

The RVC called this afternoon and she has an appointment this Thursday. I'm glad things are moving quickly. I feel so bad for poor Fudgie, all this sneezing must be driving her potty. Their vaccinations are also due in September so I feel an added urgency to get this sorted quickly.

On the plus side, the sneezing hasn't been as full on today so at least she's getting some respite from it. I'm still clinging to the hope that she'll do a massive sneeze, a bit of hay will come flying out and the mystery will be solved with no further interventions!

This would be absolutely my view too and I would have opted for the RVC. I'm glad they have responded quickly and that Fudgie can be scanned on Thursday. Sending her lots of vibes.

My Vet uses the RVC for Rabbit referrals, I am glad you opted to go there. Sending lots of vibes for the appointment xx

Thanks both. xx

Omi, I'm pretty sure they won't be doing the scan tomorrow. The appointment is just a consultation and we'll be discussing her symptoms and whether to go ahead with it. When Scrappy had her scan for her persistent blocked tear ducts, we had the consultation and the scan was arranged a few days later. The scanner itself is at the hospital in Hertfordshire so I'll have to drop her off in Camden in the morning, they'll drive her up and then bring her back in the evening.

Only the very best for Fudgie. Glad she is getting dealt with so promptly & getting the very best

Best of luck for a snotty hay outcome!

I agree, doing SOMETHING is always worth it :) It's another wild goose chase avoided if nothing else.

How is she today? x
She's doing well, thank you for asking.

There are definitely fluctuations in the sneezing. Sunday to Tuesday it had eased off a bit, but then she was sneezing an awful lot again yesterday. She hasn't actually sneezed that much at all today so far. Other than that she still seems well in herself.

The RVC appointment isn't until 4 this afternoon. I'm really hoping they'll say they'll keep her in at Camden tonight and take her up to Hatfield tomorrow morning to do the scan. It's just so it's over and done with for her in one big trip rather than having to keep going backwards and forwards. Plus the scan would get done sooner, otherwise we'll have to wait until next week at the earliest.

Hi all

Just wanted to give a quick update on our appointment today. She's booked in for a scan next week. Unfortunately they only do them on Thursdays so we missed this week's slot.

She was given another going over by the specialist, again nothing concerning on the examination. She did notice however that even though her nose is nice and clean her left nostril was a bit wet. She did confirm that her paws didn't show any signs of her wiping away any discharge. When they do the scan they'll try and take a deep nose swab if there's signs of discharge up there and then try and develop a culture.

I'll update again after she's had the scan next week. I have mixed feelings about the results. If everything comes back clear then there's the reassurance there's nothing wrong with her teeth or that she's harbouring a nasty illness but we'll be no nearer to solving the mystery. If tooth roots are the cause of it, then we'll have the answer but it would also mean she's a dental bun [emoji17]

So my tasks for next week are to monitor Fudgie to make sure she's still well in herself. Second task is to try not to drive myself round the bend with conjectures on what the scan may or may not reveal!

That’s a shame that you couldn’t get her scanned today but at least you’ve got her booked for next week.

I empathise so much as this was us with Phillip last year - but to see him thriving now was so worth all the examinations and scans and waiting. I hope next week you get some answers and try not to worry too much in the mean time. Easier said than done I know! Lots of love x

It's a shame you missed out on a Thursday scan this week. They do sound very thorough though and also leaving it another week will provide more data for them. However, I know it's never nice having to wait for investigations and results.

Task one will be easy, you do that so well anyway. Task 2 more of a challenge but I wish you well with it. Loads more vibes for a good outcome xx

Thanks guys xx

Yes, it was a very thorough consultation, a good 45 minutes. We went into a lot of detail about the sneezing and her lifestyle in general.

Oh I have to mention (just because I'm desperate to boast!) that the vet was very complimentary about her nails. This is the second vet who's praised my pedicures. I think I may have found my calling in life!

pedicures

dear scrappys little helper,-yes,this is a plus,-there is a right way and a very wrong way,-with rabbits especially,.because their a rabbits toe nails are part of the foot structure,[physical- damage]--I deplore having claws removed-just to satisfy someone.. very bad idea..-I donot even like hearing cats de-clawed..even though their foot is structured different..sincerely james waller from across the great pond-usa:love::wave::love:

Another quick update.

I spoke to the vet who will be doing the scan on Saturday. I got things a bit muddled on Thursday. I thought they had booked her in for the scan this week then and there and the other vet was going to phone me to arrange the logistics. Anyway, it turns out they are all booked up this week so her scan has been pushed back to next week (the 28th).

I was a bit antsy pantsy about it at first but now I'm thinking it might not be a bad thing to wait. Basically, Fudgie's sneezing and quacking have virtually stopped over the weekend. I don't really understand what's going on. The baytril was stopped a week ago and there have been no changes to her environment. Maybe there was something up her hooter after all that managed to work its way out. Or maybe this is just a temporary respite.

I'm going to monitor her still over this week and if there is no more sneezing and quacking I'll phone the vet again next Tuesday to discuss whether we should still go ahead with the scan. I just have this horrible feeling that if I cancel the scan, sod's law will kick in and I'll wake up next Thursday and she'll be sneezing like the clappers again.
