Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Suspected URTI advice please

Good plan Scrappy. Its possible that what was ailing her was transitory & her diagnostics might not be necessary after all. Everything crossed xx

Thanks J&B, I'm really hoping that's the case.

Just out of interest, when Boo was quacking, did it ever temporarily stop for a few days or was it pretty much continuous up until her dental?

I think I only heard it 2 or 3 times in total. Her first consult was due to a collection of symptoms (quacking, sneezing, pawing her mouth) but we only heard or saw each very rarely over perhaps a month. They were highly supervised back then so I wouldn't have missed much. She hasn't quacked since :)

Thanks J&B. Unfortunately in the last couple of weeks she's quacked an awful lot more than that.

I'm starting to think my buns are bored of being rabbits and want to change species. First Fudgie starts quacking like a duck and then the other day Snoopy decided to gallop like a horse, complete with full on head tossing.

When Doughnut had a respiratory infection she didn't quack it was more like a piglet snorting, mainly when she was eating. Her sneezing doesn't sound like a quack either. It's frustrating when you don't hear it for a while and think it's all over then starts again. Good luck.

Hi all

Thanks for asking after Fudgie xx

The sneezing has improved a lot since it first started. Initially she seemed to be sneezing all the time. She's not sneezing anywhere near as much as she was but is still having a few mini sneezing fits throughout the day. At one point she'd gone about four days without quacking at all. But now she's averaging about one or two quacks per day.

So, even though she is doing a lot better now I think there is still a problem so I'm going ahead with the scan as planned. I'm dropping her off tomorrow afternoon and she'll have the scan on Thursday. The specialist and I agreed it would be a good idea to have her kept in overnight so the sneezing can be observed with "expert eyes" and also to see if a change in the environment will make any difference. Although I will find it difficult not having her here for a couple of days.

I'm sorry its still continuing (though pleased it seems a little improved). Diagnostics seem sensible - I hope they can get to the bottom of it. I know you'll miss her terribly. Is Snoop going along too? Or do they think she is best seen alone? xx

Thanks both xx

I'll be taking her on her own. I know the general rule is to always keep bonded rabbits together but unfortunately my two have a tendency to fall out if I take them to the vet together. I think they just wind each other up! She has stayed at the vet overnight a couple of times before and it didn't affect their bond.

She will be going with a very substantial packed lunch though: I've just been out for a big forage so she'll have a nice big sackload to take with her tomorrow.

Good luck for the scan on Thursday x last time Treacle went in for a dental, I packed her some home made treats for her "lunch" the nurses thought it highly amusing !

Thanks Jane xx

I've just dropped her off at the vet's, so it's just a case of waiting for news. They said I probably wouldn't hear from them until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest.

I hope she'll settle ok. She has her big bag of forage to keep her occupied. I did warn them there's loads of brambles in there!

I really hope that you will hear an update ASAP. The waiting and worrying is awful. Topping up the vibes again xx

I like to settle Boo in with a big bag of forage too - a little home from home. I hope the time passes quick, its horrible having them away from home overnight xx
