Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Changes to Eravac vaccine

Is anyone aware of any changes to the Eravac vaccine licence?

We have switched from Filavc to Eravac at work and when I questioned it no one seemed sure. They just said there was some change to the licencing, and filavac is only licenced for meat market rabbits?

We don't have a big rabbit client base so our vets aren't necessarily the most up to date and I always thought it was Eravac that was licenced for meat rabbits?

The only thing I can see that's changed is Eravac now do single dose vials in the last 6 month's or so?

Personally I prefer Filavac for the 12 month's cover and the fact it does 1 and 2!

There was some information on Facebook Myxomatosis VHD Map page about Eravac in the very near future being officially licensed for 12 months cover - that's the only recent change I am aware of. I think that Eravac has been available in single doses for quite some time.

I was told the same thing by my vets. That they have chosen to now stock Eravac (and recommend booster every 9 months) because that one is the only one licensed for pet rabbits. I always though Filavac was licensed though :?

Well the wording on the Filavac data sheet indicates the officially it is only licenced for Meat Rabbits/Future Breeding Rabbits- ie in a commercial farming setting

''For active immunisation of rabbits (fattening and future breeders) from 10 weeks of age, to reduce mortality due to rabbit haemorrhagic disease caused by classical (RHDV1) and type 2 (RHDV2) virus strains.''

''No information is available on the safety and efficacy in pet rabbits.''

That said most Vets have been using Filavac for a few years. The wording on the data sheet does NOT imply the vaccine is 'unsafe' for Pet Rabbits, just that it's efficacy has not been trialed (prior to Licencing) in a Pet Rabbit situation.

The wording on the Eravac Data Sheet does not specify that the use is for Meat/Breeding Rabbits, just that the 'target species is Rabbits'

I could be completely wrong but I assumed people used Eravac for meat rabbits because its cheaper? Could be wrong there, also because they wouldn't need protection past the time it covers, which is less than Filavac?

I thought vial size aswell but I think filavac comes in singles and the larger one for multiple buns to be done from. Unless Eravac only comes in the multi bun size? Not saying it does I've no clue. I remember vets saying with the multi vac vials they have to use them in 24 hours or something.

This was literally just what I assumed though [emoji38]

ARGGG this worries me, when I spoke to atleast one of the vets she didn't know it only lasts 9 months, she actually thanked me for telling her I don't think it's been extended to 12 months yet based on a leaflet we received the small print still said 9 months.

Also the data sheet says it should be room temperature before use, that's also never going to happen, i wonder if that has any impact of effectiveness ?

Charlie isn't due for 11 months but I'm hoping I can get Filavac from one of the other branches!
