Very sore spot on my rabbits neck scared it’s an abscess

I have pictures of the process of this spot to today’s date scroll to the bottom of all the information for the pictures.

So since May 19 I noticed a bit of redness to my bunnys neck/dewlap and looked kinda like a hot spot. I put cream on it and it started to heal.

I’ve watched it everyday and she started to chew it at first and lick it non stop I had a cream I was given by my guineapigs vet 3 years ago. It’s called Bactroban it’s antibiotic ointment for skin infection or removing bacteria from the skin I used it on my guineapigs sore feet.

It started getting better when I put that cream on but belle would always lick it off and the spot has gotten so much worse.

At first it just felt like dry flaky scaby skin on her neck no lump or swellings.

But I checked it tonight and it feel more rounded Im so worried I have speculations from reading up stuff if it’s, over grooming, or ringworm, or abscess.
I came to the conclusion of overgrooming since my rabbit is 8 pounds and I figured she was just struggling to groom herself.

If anyone knows what this is or if it’s an emergency not good money wise at the money and it’s gotten worse since last night when I looked to now.

May 19: this is the day I first spotted the spot on my bunny neck and figured she just over groomed by accident. So I was gonna watch it overnight to see how it looks later.

May 20: this was the second day after finding the spot on May 19 I decided that overnight it looked more sore decided to try some of the Bactroban ointment.

May 23: seen an improvement overnight after putting the ointment on.

May 25: started to heal again stopped applying ointment here.

June 1: started to see the spot coming back again.

June 6: started to become looking like a hot spot again.

June 9: I decided to put Bactroban ointment on the spot again here.

June 14: after the cream it started to heal up.

June 16: I felt happy with it and left it alone here no more cream

June 18: was rubbing my bunny’s head and chin and I felt a hardness to it so I freaked out again and put more ointment on it.

Unfortunately your photos are not showing up. It is impossible for anyone on here to diagnose your Rabbit's problem. I am assuming that you are not in the UK ? Your Rabbit does need to be examined by a Vet ASAP as the longer treatment is delayed the worse the prognosis. Is there any Charitable organisation you could approach for help with funding emergency Veterinary care ? Or any family/friend who may be willing/able to lend you some money ?

The fact that you can feel 'hardness' on your Bunny's chin makes me think the problem may be a Dental abscess. If so no amount of topical ointment will help. So in short the best advice I can offer is to try to find a way to fund a consultation with a Vet ASAP. Best wishes x

i just fixed the issues the pictures shoud be their now im gonna make a new post since alot of people seen it without pictures

The photos are showing now. I’m afraid I haven’t a clue what it is, but if I was you I would definitely want bunny to see a vet and I’d take those photos with me. Hope bunny feels better soon x

I can see the pics now. Given that it keeps recurring you do need to get a Vet to examine her. This may involve the Vet taking a small scraping from the lesion for microscopic examination. As the wound appeared to improve with the use of Bactroban then it may be that it is a bacterial dermatitis. The treatment may have been stopped too soon, hence the recurrence.

But only a thorough examination by a Vet can establish a proper diagnosis and thus provide appropriate treatment. Bacterial dermatitis may be a secondary symptom of another underlying problem so that needs to be looked into too.

I would agree with the others, that she needs to be seen by a vet :thumb:

How much would a medical bill cost to get all that done? The spot looks more worse the cream I’m using was expired in 2016 but I barley used the cream. What if it’s self mutilation how can I get her to stop licking and biting. I felt another bit of tough skin directly under her chin but it really hard to see but it feels like how her first spot felt when it showed up. I thought at one point I felt like brad sized spot as well.

I have no idea how much the Vet treatment would cost. All I can say is that no amount of advice given on here will be of any help without first establishing what the actual problem is. To do that you need to consult a Vet. Sorry to be blunt, but there really is no other option if you want to do your best to help your Rabbit.

i 100% agree with you on this i feel like me posting these update could actually help someone. cause when i do bring her if if the spots dont go away maybe if it comes back a weird skin disease people would learn and this could help someone who might be worried or if she gets even more sick or passes away at least id be helping other people before its to late. im still gonna post updates i might made another thread about someone i notcied but it rare. and happens rarley.

Update on sore spot on neck

so heres a update 3 days later. after posting this thread i decided to be more consistent with the cream applying it 3 times daily. and i have seen a major improvement.

same day june 18 when i posted this thread after taking that picture of belles spot i applyed cream went back in and checked 9 hours later and it looked so much more better.

June 19: next morning still applying cream. got worried thought i seen blood but nothing was ozzing out.

still same day i had seen tuffs of hair near her on the floor.


June 20: i feel like its getting better keeping the cream consitently applied it looks better to me in the pictures but maybe it is getting worse. but it dosent feel as swollen or puffed out now.

i should say as well shes behaving normal eating, drinking, and pooping.and even popcorning/ getting really hyper.

If the cream expired in 2016 it may well be a breeding ground for germs in its own right or the chemicals in it could have broken down and applying it may be making matters worse. I really think that Belle needs to see a vet. The vets will have a standard consultation fee and you can discuss treatment options and costs with them. I honestly think you need to get a vet to look at the area. By all means keep sharing the changes in the area, but I don’t think just watching and waiting is really an option for Belle. As prey animals rabbits are programmed to hide any pain or suffering they experience and so it can mean that they are actually very unwell by the time we notice any changes in them.

I agree with the advice you have been given, your rabbit really needs to be seen by a rabbit savvy vet as soon as possible.
