  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bunny is excessively licking herself

New Kit
Hello,
I have had my bunny for a a little over 2 years now. She is 3 years old and has recently gone to the vet a few days ago for what was diagnosed as a skin bacteria from excess moisture on her cheeks. We noticed there was a problem when her cheeks were continuously wet for no known reason. It has been 2 days of treatment and now I have noticed she is excessively licking her chest and stomach, and even under her arms to the point where she is fairly wet on her entire under body. Has anyone ever experienced this with their bun? If you have any idea what this could mean, it would be appreciated if you respond. Thank you!

Hello

Did the Vet check your Rabbits teeth ? Dental problems can cause excessive salivation (ptyalism) and sometimes obsessive licking of fur. There is some additional information on these links:

Teeth would be my first guess as well. May need a full examination and x-rays under sedation.
Is she maintaining her weight?

Yes, the vet did a check for her teeth and said she looks fine. She is maintaining her weight too and is still very active.
