Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Urine sample - clever bunny

Hello,

My little Pepper needs to have her pee tested and it’s proving to be trickier than expected.

1. I had her in the carrier for over 2 hours, but no pee. Offered a bowl of water, but she only got angry and tried to move it. Tried a bottle instead, but no interest.

2. I put clingfilm in her tray but she spotted it straight away and refused to go in.

3. I removed her usual puppy pad from her tray and hoped she’d pee on the plastic, but she quickly spotted the missing pad.

4. The vet gave me some kitty litter to see on she’ll go on that - but 3hrs later and no luck...

I don’t know what else to try - I’m not willing to try and express her bladder as I have no experience of this.

She’s a very clever bun and knows how a tray should look and smell; it’s proving hard to get her to pee xx

I think she'll pee eventually, just have to be patient (and alert ready to collect it).
When I have to get urine samples I find it easiest first thing when the buns are waking up (and tend to pee).
Have you tried having her tray with nothing but a thin layer of hay in it? If she gets in to eat and happens to pee it'll go through the hay and pool in the tray and you can collect it.
Good luck!

Amazing! Thank you! I’ll try that :D

I agree that you should not try to express her bladder. If that is necessary it is a task best left for the pros.
It can be hard to get samples from some bunnies. My Gemini kept fouling the pee with poo, so it required a lot of attention.
As noted by Sarahbun, it may take time, especially with a bunny who is so well trained as your bunny is to use the litterbox.
