Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Giant with gut stasis, help please!

I have a two and a half year old giant continental, male rabbit called Val. He’s an indoor rabbit.

Last week he started to not eat as much as he would usually. Then on the Thursday hardly anything at all so he went into the vets overnight on Friday (I did ask for a rabbit savvy vet! My usual exotic specialist has just left unfortunately).

He was checked for obstructions and had jabs for pain relief and gut problems. I picked him up yesterday afternoon as he was eating fine at the vets.

He ate a few greens overnight but no hay or pellets. So not normal.

I’ve rung the vet this morning to see what they suggest. They didn’t end up checking him for dental issues (he’s quite hard to handle so would sedation to be checked!).

I’m just wondering if anyone has any advice or ideas of foods that could tempt him back to his normal eating.

Obviously I’ll be guided by the vets too.

Thank you xx

Rabbits who are recovering from gut stasis rarely go back to eating a full range of foods immediately. It's usually a case of tempting them with some of their favourite foods with perhaps also some strong-smelling herbs like coriander and parsley. I would also try to cut some fresh grass and offer it.

Dental issues could also be a possibility. Has he had dental problems previously? I understand about examination of the teeth. It's very difficult to examine the back teeth properly without a GA anyway.

Are his poos normal in size and consistency? You should also have been given some oral medication to continue with at home for a few days i.e. pain relief and gut meds.

I think I would monitor him for a couple of days and see if there's any improvement.

I hope he feels better soon. Let us know how he gets on.
