  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

anyone uses black tea bag (w/ Tannins) to unblock tear duct?

Happy Hopping

Wise Old Thumper
so I read this note from a senior animal care friend on plain old black tea as black tea has tannins inside:

Tannins in tea are responsible for antioxidant activities of black & other dark tea. They have both +ve & -ve effects on the body. The +ve health benefits of tannin comes from its anti-carcinogenic and anti-mutagenic properties, mostly due to anti-oxidising nature.

Tannins also remove harmful microbes from the body, and fight against harmful bacteria, viruses and fungi. By speeding up blood clotting, tannins also have a healing effect on cuts and wounds. Other beneficial properties of tannins include stabilizing blood pressure

the person who uses the above told me she uses cool tea bag (after it was in boil water), and patch it on the eyes area

I grab my bun to see the vet today. And as he tries to flush, both side is blocked. So I was wondering if I should try warm tea bag and hoping the heat can break down the block tear duct. I haven't try this yet. Anyone has any insight on this?

I don't think I've used it in an animal before, but bathing with cooled down tea is something that is well known for eye issues in non-infected eyes. I think it's better to use a lint-free cotton pad than the tea bag, as there is too much danger of the tea bag bursting and getting tea leaves in the eye.
