  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Is my rabbit too thin?

Hi, I've made a couple of posts this week regarding the low weight of my rabbits. In particular the continental giant.

This is the second year I have had my rabbits and had them both from 9 weeks of age. At their routine vaccine this year the vet checked teeth and said they have slight spurs on their back teeth (although no health concerns in terms of sores and no problems eating) and to reduce pellets and up hay. They already have a good quality unlimited hay from dustfreehay and have burgess pellets. So I changed their pellets to science selective as noticed they are harder so I thought good for the teeth. They said they will check in 3 months time.

After three months the both have lost weight the Conti gone down from 4kg to 3kg and the dwarf has lost a bit too but still ok, but she does look slimmer to me too.

Someone on here suggested I post some pics for advice on if thin or not. So I'll add the pics here.

My plan of action is, from reading on here, to add some fibafirst, and junior pellets, maybe I'll move back to burgess? As it has some sugars so help to gain weight. Also, I will add some alfalfa hay and oats as a treat. Any other advice would be appreciated.

The rabbits seem happier enough and active. Health is my main aim, Im not after the biggest Conti in the world just a healthy one. If you copy and paste or click the pics should work, I took them this morning from a few different angles.

I prefer to feel my rabbits to determine healthy weight rather than solely relying on eye. To me they don't look underweight but its really hard to go on a photo alone, I certainly wouldn't be in a rush to start changing their diet dramatically again. If you are worried I'd book another appointment with the vet so they can check their weight properly and also re-check the teeth. Your vet obviously felt it was more benefial that they increase their hay consumption and reduce pellets so I would personally want their advice moving forward.

Thank you! Much appreciated they said he was too boney especially on the hips.

In which case I would probably get some fiba first as these are really easy to sneak him a few individually. The current diet has obviously helped the teeth so you just need to find a balance between what you were feeding before and what your feeding now.
