Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

A female rescue rabbit, age unknown and very aggressive is getting stiff in her hind legs. Does anyone know of any medication/supplement that could be added to her food to help her. There is no way of giving any meds by syringe because of her aggression, she will tolerate a nose rub and that's it.

I give Metacam, and am creative with it, for different rabbits, so, for one I mix it with apple puree baby food, another likes it so much that she will just take it straight from syringe by choice, I've hidden Metacam in basil leaves, and in banana slices and on rolled oats. It's just about being creative.

Elphie was a good girl and took metacam from syringe. I did however have to put her tramadol on a treat (oxbow joint support) to get her to take it without fuss.

Good luck at the vets on Monday. :)

I would also echo metacam. I think for something as serious as what you've described a supplement wouldn't cut it. however oxbow do do a rabbit joint support. some have say it has helped. I do think that its more of a preventative measure or possible "help" for very minimal arthritis. I wouldn't go for it as the only treatment however as I don't think it would have any benefit for a serious bout of arthritis as you're describing.

my vet offers acupuncture, altho not all do. perhaps when she is friendlier you could look into such a thing.

metacam can be given without handling, mine takes it right from the bars with no handling at all, she knows what "metacam" time means  you can hide it in food & so on :) metacam is nice and sweet tasting so most rabbits don't have an aversion to it.

I got her five years ago from a local rescue, she was found roaming, God knows how they managed to catch her. No one wanted her because of her aggression. If I offered her a syringe she would lunge. I have to clean her out when she's in a good mood for her and then be very careful.🐇🐰

Metacam is definitely the first treatment to try. Once you've given it to them a few times they will usually start begging for it, even going up on their back legs and putting their mouth over the syringe.
