  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Advantage- bad reactions?

Sky-O

Wise Old Thumper
12 years ago I killed Moon when using Xenex on her, and her reacting badly. Her organs failed the next day and she died.

I've just had to treat my remaining four for fleas, and used Advantage (which is what I last used, about 9 years ago).

Autumn, Wish, Flame, no probs at all.

Gave tiny old Dopey a half dose and she's freaked the hell out. I wasn't sure if that was because she is hyper sensitive and hates being touched, so having something foreign on her back made her need to get it off, but she didn't stop, so I wasn't it off. It's not red, and there doesn't appear to be a localised reaction, but I'm now terrified I've killed her like I killed Moon. She's sat in her litter tray cleaning her feetsies. But I'm scared. She's 12 years and 8 months. She's no spring chicken, but I also know she didn't react like this to it last time (although that was 9 years ago).

Has anyone else had a rabbit react to advantage? Outcomes?

I don't know what to do now, as I'm reasonably confident she does have fleas (not sure how it's all happened, as our cat is regularly treated).

I have only used Advantage a couple of times and neither Rabbit had any problems with it. I am sorry I cant offer more comprehensive advice. If it'd make you feel less anxious maybe give the OOH Vet a call for advice. They may suggest some supportive fluid therapy. Sending lots of vibes x

Sending lots of vibes, I’ve not used it before so I can’t advise. I hope she will be ok xx
