  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Plumpkin - Farewell

'Hello Rachel,

I am afraid I cannot give advice on patients I haven’t seen. As you are currently under the care of another vets they can refer you to us via our online referral request system, and they can ask for advice about their patient if they contact us directly. But I’m afraid I am unable to help directly without seeing the patient.

Hopefully it works out for you and I may potentially see you as a referral if your vets which to go down this route.

Best wishes

Sonya'

Please can someone help me here - does this mean I need to call up my vet and ask them to email her? I have been crying about Plumpkin all morning because I'm so stressed and can't think straight.

EDIT: I have called up my vet and the receptionist is trying to sort out a referal for me. Fingers crossed.

I've not really been in this situation, but yes I think this is the "professional" way it is supposed to work. Some specialist vets will register you as a new patient if you are intending to see them as your regular vet, but atm I think you are wanting a second opinion on Plumpkin, but keeping the rabbits registered with your usual vet. It will make sense as well as your vets can then forward any relevant information they have about Plumpkin as well as her medical history.

I really hope that you can get Plumpkin seen by Sonya asap and that she can advise the best treatment plan for her. Sending loads of vibes for Plumpkin and also lots of hugs for you. It must be very stressful trying to do your best for her and seeing her unhappy.

Yes! Absolutely. Your vet needs to refer her. Normally just sending notes across. Don't be disheartened - its good practice

Plumpkin vibes xxx

Sonya may work for a 'referral only' vet. You can check this with their receptionist, and if this is the case then you will need your vet to refer you. It's very quick and all the info and a brief history will be sent over. You can explain the situation and specify that it's urgent.

Some specialist vets will see clients without a referral from their normal vet. This is also perfectly fine, as they simply request the history and it's sent over quickly in time for your consultation.

Hugs for you. This is distressing to see Pumpkin like this. You're trying your best.
You need to get to the bottom of this problem, and I think seeing an exotic specialist could be the very best move.

Thank you so much for your messages of support everyone.

We just got a call from the receptionist at our vet to confirm that the referal has been sent to Highcroft. I hope that this means we'll be able to visit soon.

I'm trying to stay as positive as possible but it has all got on top of me quite a bit :(

Rabbits and their health problems do get us down greatly. Try and breathe, slow down, and know that you are doing the very best for Plumpkin and that at this moment things are OK. She might have things going on that you don't yet know about, but she is eating and at least that's one less thing to worry about.

If you can somehow feel calmer in yourself, everything will seem easier. Sometimes deep breathing, or a bit of meditation, can bring us back down to earth and ground us. Our worries on the other hand, tend to send us into outer space.

(((((((((( hugs ))))))))))

I'm glad you got the referral sorted by your vets. In my experience you should hear back from the specialist to arrange an appointment within the next few days.

Lots of hugs for you too. It's understandable that you're feeling upset. You've worked so hard to try and help Plumpkin it must feel so dispiriting that despite all that effort she's still not "right". I really hope Sonja can get to the bottom of it.

I hope the specialist can see her and help her. I can totally understand you feeling this way. You have done everything you could have possibly done for Plumpkin so far, and she is so lucky to have you. I’m sending lots of vibes and hugs xx

Thank you so much everyone, I am moved by your support.

The good news is that Plumpkin is booked in to see the specialist next Wednesday AM. The consultation is 45 minutes long. I feel hopeful that this could be a turning point for her.

This is wonderful news and so heartening for you and beautiful Plumpkin. You'll get the chance to discuss in detail with someone who is very much an expert in this field and should offer you some answers and more importantly, a way forward that is in Plumkins interests and hopefully ease the problems this poor rabbit has had from her pervious owner. You are such a wonderful caring and kind person and you are enriching Plumpkins life to give her the life she so deserved.

We're off to the specialist tomorrow!

I'm feeling super nervous. We will be leaving early and getting two trains followed by a taxi. We're leaving plenty of time incase of any delays.

The thing I feel the most scared about is that it will all be for nothing. I really want there to be a solution for our Plumpkin. I know it can't be 'fixed', but I hope there is something more long term - even if it's just a case of removing one troublesome tooth or something like that.

I really hope it's worth it, especially as Plumpkin will be scared being in the carrier for so long.

Any tips to make her comfy? She has a towel in the carrier and I'm bringing her some tasty snacks in a jar in my bag :)

I just pad the carrier right out with towels and fleece blankets when I travel with Phillip to the specialist. I put a towel/blanket at the far end of the carrier which I try and rest vertically if that makes sense, so he doesn't bash himself in case of any sudden jolts. He doesn't enjoy it by any means but he snuggles right down in the fleeces!

Good luck for the specialist! :)
