  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Plumpkin - Farewell

Thank you so much everyone for your kind words.

Plumpkin is currently at the vet for her dental and she will be getting an x-ray at the same time. I never got a call back from Sonya yesterday, but I might try emailing her instead with the x-rays because she has an exotic pet rescue on the side of being a vet - I should be able to reach her through that email address.

I assume that there's no way I can save money by getting Plumpkin insurance, because this is an existing problem rather than a one off accident? I'm trying to think of if there are any ways I can make this more affordable for me.

EDIT: The vet called and advised us against the x-ray today, saying the specialist will definitely want to take her own x-rays so it will just be more of an expense for us. But he thinks it's a great idea for us to go to a specialist.

Hi there

Regard the insurance, most companies don't cover dentals (except perhaps PetPlan) anyway and as it's a pre-exisitng condition as you say, it wouldn't be covered.

Having conscious dentals would drastically cut down on the cost of the procedure, but that might not be an option for you.

I hope you can get some advice from Sonya if you feel that's your way forward with this.

I wish I was close to you, I would definitely help with transport etc xx

Unfortunately you would not be able to get Dental treatment covered by Insurance as it's a pre-existing condition  Some Vets are willing to set up a Payment Plan where-by you have a 'contract' to pay a specific amount each week/month rather than having to pay for each treatment in full every time. You would keep up the weekly/monthly payments even if Plumpkin managed to go for several months without needing a Dental.

Then there are things you may be able to do to raise a few more £s

Selling stuff on Ebay (Amanda- 'Barn Yard Bunnies' is the expert on that, she sells loads of stuff on Ebay for ARC, our local Rescue) I am sure she'd give you some tips and advice re all that

Car Boot Sales

Setting up a CrowdFund page

Specific sponsored events- something for Easter maybe ?

I expected as much with it being a pre-existing condition :(

I sell a lot on eBay, I used to do so as a side business so I might have another clear out to see if I can raise some money.

I'm a full time artist and a lot of my customers are quite invested in Plumpkin's story, so wondering if I could raffle one of my pieces with the proceeds going towards her vet bills.

I am hoping that my earnings might increase a bit this year, and luckily the cost of Plumpkin's care is split between me and my OH, but we are both definitely feeling the strain of it!

I don't think they do conscious dentals at my practice - is it very common or more of a specialist thing? I'm really hoping that Sonya can indeed help us. Thank you for your kind words MM <3

Have you got a website ?

it's worth asking, as often just one vet in a practice will do conscious dentals. Or you could shop around for a vet who does?

No, it's not a specialist thing at all. My vet doesn't do them, but I know of a couple of vets who do, and I've found it helpful in cases where the rabbit cannot have anaesthetic due to various reasons.

There are people who are dead set against this idea, and would rather their rabbit risked anaesthesia so you will hear differing opinions, as always :)

This is a great idea :)

I had thought you were a graphic designer!

Plumpkin is doing really well, thank you guys! It was just one tooth that was causing her a problem and needed trimming. Apparently it was a very quick procedure and she seems much better in herself already :D

Aww - thank you so so much for the update BP. I was hoping to have some positive news about my guilty pleasure favorite rabbit on here - and it is such a positive one.
I hope Plumpkin is settled and being spoilt with nose rubs and cuddles. And I am so pleased it was just a small trim on her tooth. Please give he a nose rub from me and nose bumps from Lillian and Henry. xx:love:

I'm pleased that Plumpkin is doing well and also that it was just a minor trim which was needed. It doesn't solve the overall problem that you are dealing with, but it does mean that you have a bit of time to plan what to do for her.

I'm really pleased Plumpkin came through her dental ok. I hope you're able to talk with the specialist soon and that she'll be able to help long term

Fantastic news! Thank you for posting back :)

I emailed Sonya today because I still haven't heard back. I'm not feeling happy about Plumpkin at all - she is eating and everything but just sits in a ball with her eyes closed all day :( Genuinely feeling so hopeless and like there's no 'fix' for this. The contrast is astounding given that she's living with two healthy rabbits who are running around all day. I'm so sad.
