Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

rabbits sneezing... unknown causes!?

Did you get an appointment with the specialist? How are the bunnies?

So sorry for the slow replies here.

It has been a couple of weeks now that we have been trying to arrange a vet appointment at the specialist's. We had to give up with J C Halls vets in the end we gave up as it is too hard to get to and they are unwilling to see him at the weekend. They suggested that we go to the only over rabbit specialist in London, The Royal Veterinary College, (aka my university!!!!). I called them up and they said that they need a referral letter from Vets4Pets in order to see him... so I called them, and they said they hadn't written one at all.....so they are going to do that on Wednesday for me and send it to the RVC directly. The RVC will then call me to organise a deep swab. It is actually ridiculous how long this is taking and how Vets4Pets had not even written him a referral letter, despite referring him! Hopefully by next week he should be on his way to the vets at my uni or at the very least have an appointment booked.

In regards to taking him to the RVC I need some advice. I commute to the RVC everyday and it takes me about 1 hour and 15 mins (I take a train and then a tube to get to uni) to get there. Does anyone have any advice on how I should go about taking him to uni? I don't know if I should take him in his carrier or in a slightly bigger 70cm long cage for the journey as it is a long time to be cramped in for. I'm also concerned about food and water. i could attach his water bottle to his cage or carrier door no problem, but is it necessary? And as for hay, I was thinking of just putting in a fleece liner in his carrier as it is less mess but perhaps I should just put hay in there to make him feel a bit more cosy and so he can eat it?

thanks for the advice,

hope you and your bunnies are well! xx

Can your bunny stretch out and change positions in the carrier? If so, it may be easier to maneuver the carrier. Even on shorter trips I find that a water bottle will often leak when going over bumpy roads. So, you may want to put a water bowl under the bottle to catch any drips so your bunny does not get too damp. Since they will likely be sedating your bunny for the deep nasal swab, you may want to ask the RVC if it would be OK for your bunny to eat hay right up to the time of the appointment. You also may want to take a small amount of your bunny's regular food/greens/hay with you to offer after the procedure and for the trip home. Sending you all positive vibes.

I think your bun will probably prefer the safety of an enclosed carrier rather than cage. It should also be easier to manouvre around other travellers & sit on your knee while on the train. I pack mine with layers of towel & fleece for absorbency & comfort. Maybe small a bundle of hay in case he will have a munch. I take moistened herbs which I offer when stationary. Good luck - I hope it goes well

Hello everyone, I hope you and your bunnies are well!

I took Bear to the RVC in his carrier (he can stretch all the way in it) with a blanket on top. I lined it with a towel and a puppy pad and added some hay in there which he munched on a lot.The RVC were absolutely fantastic. The rabbit specialist vet was simply incredible. I was really impressed at how good she was at handling him and at how much she knew about rabbits! The RVC did the swab and it all went fine, so now we are just awaiting the results! For the time being, he is on Zithromax.

Thank you for all your help x

I'll let you know what the verdict is!

Here are some photos of the trip!

The RVC has such a good reputation :)

I'm glad it all went well and I hope you get the results back soon.
