Some sort of rabbit seizure?

Hello everyone,

First post on here, motivated by something very unusual happening to Thumper! Apologies if all the details are unnecessary but I'd rather put down too much than too little.

Thumper's a female English rabbit who's had all relevant jabs and ops. She's almost a year old. In November, I picked her up for a cuddle before putting her in her hutch, and whilst I was holding her, she stretched out her spine and neck and twisted to one side. I thought I'd somehow caught a nerve or otherwise hurt her, so put her down. She slowly began hopping around, seemingly keen to get into the corners of the walk-in cage that she lives in. She kept bumping herself onto things as she did this and I actually thought she'd somehow gone blind. She didn't respond to any stimulus I was giving, such as food, strokes, or waving my hand in front of her face, but she was movement. Her movement was really odd; it was as if she was drunk. She didn't seem to be in pain - there were no rapid movements - or discomfort, as far as I could tell. She made no noise, which is normal.

I took her to the vet; it was about forty minutes after this had happened that we got there, and when we opened the door to her carry basket, she hopped out and started sniffling around like nothing had happened. The vet felt her over, took her temperature, checked all sorts of things, and found absolutely nothing wrong. Which, obviously, was great. A mystery, but great. So we took her away and concluded that by picking her up, I'd stunned her in some way but she was now better. The vet told us if it happened again, we should film it - which we didn't think was great because the chances of taking our cameras with us at Bunny Bedtime was pretty minimal.

Some reading online (well, frantic googling) led me to conclude that she wasn't immediately on the way out, and since then, nothing's happened. Until today, when - I wasn't there - she apparently did a very similar thing. This time, she either fell about 8 inches and this prompted the odd stretch/strange movements, or she began the odd stretch/strange movements and in the course of this, fell about 8 inches. We have filmed it, and it's essentially as described above. The other two bunnies she lives with (whom she has lived with since before we bought them) were very interested when she started trying to get to the corners; they sniffled around her and seemed to be able to tell something was wrong.

This evening, she seems fine again - I'm about to put them to bed - but has anyone got any ideas what may be the matter, and what if anything I can do about it?

Thanks!

If I've left anything out, let me know...!

Hi there and welcome to the Forum.

I was sorry to read about Thumper's seizures. I have experience of this in rabbits (though my vet hadn't seen one before so I was basically on my own and did a lot of research).

Seizures can be due to the parasite e.cuniculi.

https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/rabbit-health/e-cuniculi/

https://www.kingswoodvets.co.uk/information/rabbits

It might be worth researching this, and looking into a course of Panacur for 28 days. If you decide to do this, the companions will also have to be treated as it's shed via the urine. You should also disinfect the litter boxes with a 1% solution of bleach on days 21 and 28 of treatment to disrupt the lifecycle of the parasite.

There is some info on seizures here and the possible diagnoses:

I did manage to get some medication for my rabbit but it was at my own suggestion, because as I say, my vet had no experience of seizures. I did manage the situation and it did get better, though I know it's really scary when it happens and their little bodies contort.

You could ask your vet to consult with a rabbit specialist if you don't feel they are confident. It's always difficult when the rabbit isn't presenting when you are at the vet, but your description should suffice as it's very clear.

Hello

I have a Rabbit with a complex neurological condition and he has seizures which present as you describe . But there are a few possible causes of seizures in Rabbits which are more common than the condition affecting my Rabbit. This link gives a few possibilities

http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Neurology/seizure.htm

Did your Vet mention treating all of your Rabbits with a 28 day course of Fenbendazole (Panacur/Lapizole) as a precaution in case the seizures are related to Encephalitozoon Cuniculi (EC)

https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/rabbit-health/e-cuniculi/

https://www.dechra.co.uk/therapy-ar...cs-antifungals/disease-information/e-cuniculi

https://www.dovepress.com/encephali...-manageme-peer-reviewed-fulltext-article-VMRR

Whilst EC is certainly not the only cause of seizures in Rabbits, it might be worth asking your Vet about treating all of your Rabbits with a precautionary course of Fenbendazole.

I dont know if your own 'Googling' bought up these links, but I'll post them here just in case you have not seen them

http://wildpro.twycrosszoo.org/S/00dis/Miscellaneous/Epilepsy_Bears.htm

http://veterinarycalendar.dvm360.com/seizures-exotic-pets-proceedings

This may seem like an odd question, but do you even notice your English Spot Rabbit produces very large oval shaped faeces that may seem very moist, instead of the usual fecal poo output ? And have you ever noticed a very exaggerated peristaltic motion of her guts, something like this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdAjaB0_xuo

My Rabbit has 'absences' as well as full blown seizures, this video shows him having an 'absence'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onl22LHFHxY

These can last up to 3-4 minutes, he then goes back to 100% normal as if nothing ever happened.

Thank you!

Hello again and thanks for all your help and best wishes! I will spend the next couple of days sifting through this - then let you know what I think. Any other ideas welcome in the meantime, of course.

Thanks again!

You're very welcome :)

How's your rabbit doing now?

Sorry for the delay on this - I'm a teacher and had to take a half-term trip abroad with my school. We've not had any further episodes, and Thumper seems absolutely fine in and of herself; we'll keep browsing the excellent links and will hopefully be able to let people know what we decide soon.

My thanks for everyone's best wishes. She certainly doesn't seem like an ill rabbit!
