  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Runny Eye

Hi all me and my Mini Lop Ted are new here and looking for some advice. Ted was vaccinated 2 weeks ago, and it may be coincidence but he has developed a runny eye since. Just the one eye which is odd! He lives outdoors in a well ventilated, warm and cosy hutch and has free roam of our living room when we're in the house to watch him (he's a serial leather sofa chewer!) 😂.. He gets so stressed at the vets. To the point the vet nearly refused to vaccinate him... Therefore I'm hoping for some advice on his runny eye to prevent having to attend the vets again unless absolutely necessary? Thanks all

Vaccinations can cause a latent infection to flare up as vaccinations impact on the immune system. But there are numerous causes of a 'runny eye' (AKA Dacryocystitis), including infection or Dental problems. So a consultation with a Vet is important to ascertain what is causing Ted's runny eye and to get him on to the appropriate treatment.

Just to add that rabbits do not adapt well to changes in temperature. Moving your rabbit from an outside hutch into an inside living room is not advisable, especially at this time of the year. It can cause respiratory infections.

I agree xx

Hi there and welcome to the Forum

A vaccination is always a challenge to a rabbit's immune system and this can bring out latent medical issues like the runny eye you are seeing now.

Is the eye discharge clear? If so, wipe it away with a cotton wool pad dipped in cooled boiled water, twice daily. If there's a white discharge you should take him back to the vet for assessment.

If he comes inside during the day, and then goes back outside, it could prove detrimental to him. Rabbits cannot easily regulate their temperature, and doing that can also cause a dip in the immune system - the ability to fight off medical ailments.

Thanks!

Hi all

Thanks for your help!

Ted has been to the vets and has been diagnosed with an eye infection (basically Conjunctivitis), and has been prescribed eye drops twice a day for 7 days.

His teeth were checked, and these are fine - he has hay and objects to knaw on, so the vet was very happy.

His overall health is brilliant - and hes now a happy little chap again. His eyes are clearing up now thank fully.

Love Teds Mum x

Re Free Roam Time

Also may I add that re his free roam time indoors and him being an outdoor bun.

The weather where we are has been very wet recently, and so I felt it better he have free roam indoors where was can also socialise with him and give him lots of attention, rather than him go on the damp grass and get soaking wet through. He does have fresh grass/dandelion leaves etc every day that I collect for him amongst his herbs/pellets/hay and the occasional piece of carrot etc.

We don't have the heating on when Ted comes indoors as I have been advised bunnies hate temperatures to high, and we have done this with him since he was a baby - and he seems fine with this arrangement.

Thank you for your concerns however, and guidance, all is appreciated :)
