  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I'm sitting waiting for a call from the vet about the next step for Honey.

Both her eyes look terrible and sore despite pain meds.

She's eating, pooing and seems relatively herself. But what do you do when you suspect pain is still an issue despite best efforts to ease it?

Is it a case of leaving it? Pts? I don't want to wait till she's REALLY suffering... she makes a horrible snorting sound when she's sleeping so I know it's starting to effect her more.

The awful thing I'm not in a position to afford xrays....I feel a mix of emotions but mainly guilt.

Can you afford one appointment with an ophthalmologist?
They are expensive, but it would only be a one-off and I feel worth their weight in gold for the help they can give.

I don't have any advice tbh, but I'm sorry you're in this situation :(

Could the xray be done conscious? Those at my vets are about £60 so not too bad? Idk just thought it might be worth asking if they could try, if it would be helpful. Sending loads of hugs xxx

Well we now have a plan in place. We talked about a lot of possibilities including a ct scan to see a 3d image of where the tooth roots are. It would be done with her consious. Mainly because she's too vulnerable to be under anaesthetic atm. However he did say that even knowing where they are, extraction would be possible but very difficult. He has done it but in honeys case with her issues, we both felt it would hold more risks than benefits. For now she is pain free and on eye drops which have been helping. Her tear ducts are swollen but not red anymore. She's behaving happily as if nothing is wrong so pts is not an option at the moment. We are reviewing regularly. But she's got an amazing appetite and her weight has stabled. I've been putting sudacrem under her eye where she's balded a bit to keep it clean and not irritated.

The operation on her original cherry eye was successful however clearly there was this underlying problem . That eye looks no where near as bad. Just glad she seems happy.

She came into the lounge and sat on my dad's lap the other day. So cute
