Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Ok so Priscilla needs spayed that's not really my question I guess I'm looking for opinions/reassurance as to when I should go for the op? Part of me the panicky owner is just do it now as she's over 2 and I'm worried about cancer risks but the other part is thinking of her she's been through 3 general anaesthetics since October and each time has suffered stasis in recovery even with 3 gi stimulants and fluids. Plus I feel she is finally starting to settle in she's always been super confident but now I feel she's just beginning to trust that she can make this house hers she's venturing out of her room in to the rest of the house and generally causing mischief, she had a vet check and her hock is improving shes still on loxicom twice daily plus I'm using manuka honey sorry for the long post I guess I'm just anxious about her spay ,given her awful pelvis and rear end issues I'm wondering if quality of life is better than qauntity if that makes sense? I will get her spayed I'm just unsure of the urgency
Thanks for reading

I may be wrong but I don't think it is a bad idea if you were to give her another 6 months unspayed then reconsider it. Many rabbits are neutered much older than Priscilla with no sign of cancer. Someone mentioned on here giving their bunny something before a GA to help with stasis etc. not sure what it was though.

Personally I would not get her spayed for at least another 6-9 months. Given all her other problems I may even seriously consider not spaying her at all. But I would want to discuss that option at length with a Rabbit Savvy/Specialist Vet xx

Thank you I have an appointment with my usual rabbit vet to discuss but this was my feeling also, I want to do what's best for her but I also want her to enjoy her life as she's had such a tough start I don't want her time with me to be surgery and more surgery and obviously I have no actual idea how old she actually is

its a tricky one :(

for me I would always try to opt for spaying, as the hormones, phantom pregnancies etc aren't exactly nice for a bunny to go through. it can also make bonding a lot harder, and fallouts more likely, so getting them to be and stay with a friend can be difficult. for me, that's one of the most important things for a bunny is their own company. I wouldn't want to keep one on their own for a long period of time, unless they seriously could not be bonded at all.

while spaying can mostly cause life to last longer, for me its also about "quality". in my eyes spaying a rabbit (or neutering) offers a better quality of life. for rabbits they do not feel the same satisfaction for having a litter, or not having a litter, for them it is a purely survival of wanting to pass on their genes to the next generation so their species lives on. many unspayed females show behavioural issues (aggression, grumpy, angry), have phantom pregnancies or make nests, and can be so much harder to bond and keep bonded. I would never want to keep a rabbit by itself, but that will differ between people and its purely personal opinion/preference.

but also yes, she has been through a lot already. I don't think there is a right or wrong answer. spaying may be more difficult due to her current issues, and the fact she doesn't react well to the GA is a cause for concern. my Luna doesn't either, she's always in stasis afterwards, so I feel your pain.

I think I would be inclined to discuss it with a rabbit savvy vet, perhaps even get a couple of rabbit savvy vet opinions, and see what is advised. but also what you feel is best for her.

I don't think it would do any harm to wait a while longer if you wanted too. I rescued Luna in october 2015 and waited until february (march even?) 2016 to get her spayed. I wanted her to settle in, and trust me. so we could establish a mutual respect for one another and trust. some rabbits have even been spayed at 8, 9 years old. I don't think age is as much as an issue, but health.

Idk what I'd do! [emoji38]

When my bun had knee surgery, I said to my vet I was gunna wait 6 months or so before getting her spayed, but he said it'd be fine and said we should just do it (obviously this was after she'd healed, recovered and could hop again) but yea, I'd just talk to a rabbit savvy vet you trust and get their opinion :)

You never have to get her spayed, it'd make things easier, but if it's not going to be a good idea for her I just wouldn't do it :) I know everyone goes on about spaying etc but honestly every situation is unique and you've just gotta decide what's best, between you and your vet :) x

I don't have any plans to get her a friend in the near future she needs way to much attention to take on another him especially with having a foot bandage on I'd be worried any prospective husbun would interfere with it plus she's not showing any signs of phantom pregnancy or nesting and she's actually much less grumpy as she's getting used to me it's tricky as I'm always telling people to spay but my instinct says it's best to let her have some quality time

There are always exceptions to every rule ...................

My gut instinct is to only spay her if she is exhibiting distress from hormonal issues or if a trusted Rabbit savvy Vet advises you that spaying a Rabbit despite her having many other health problems is the right thing to do. If the advice was to spay I would definitely wait at least another 6-9 months before putting her through another GA for another major op'.

I have spoken to my vet who also contacted the d1ck vet for advice and the consensus is to leave her for 6 to 8 months then reassess, it's felt that with all her other issues and having had 3 anaesthetics in such a short space of time it's best for her to get back to 100% and let her enjoy life before another major op obviously any signs her hormones have gone haywire and I will need to rethink thanks for all the support
