U/D Vibes for Henry please -New 6th FebU/D after vet

Poor Henry is having a run of rotten luck just now. This is not a reflection on your ability to care for him, it is simply what can happen to any of us who keep Rabbits as Pets. Accidents and illnesses will crop up at some stage, but that does not mean the caregiver has 'failed'.

As Omi has mentioned, Penicillin injections are usually very effective with getting on top of a stubborn bacterial infection.

Sending lots of get well soon vibes for both Henry and for you.

Oh and no more self blame, that's an order from a Wise Old Thumper ;)

It isn’t your fault and you are doing a great job, believe me :thumb: sending lots more vibes and hugs xx

Update after vets visit. I got 2 hours sleep last night, in between sobbing, sniffing (man flu) and sheer worry and concern about Henry. More discharge from his eye this morning which I cleaned out but Henry looking very depressed and just so sad.
Vet was anothehr really nice, sympathetic and understanding vet (inbetween my bouts of sobbing). She got more goopy stuff out (shows how useless I am) and after some careful and considerate discussion, she suggested the best route forward in this instance was to go with daily penicillan injections (thank you a million times Scrappys little helper). It's called penicillian G (or something that sounded like that). Henry behaved beautifully - as he usually does, but he really is quite unwell. He has lost more weight since last week - now down to 1.9kg and he was 2kg last week. The vet felt the penicillian was the best way to attack the tear duct infection at this stage, rather than a GA. There was no obvious abcess she could see or feel from the external part of his face, but Henry was most reluctant to allow an internal teeth check. I think he'd just had enough of being prodded and squeezed.
We have to take him back tomorrow and sunday and monday for follow up injections since I would be no use whatsoever at injections and I just feel a complete loss of confidence right now inmy ability to look after an empty room, let alone a bunny that needs me. So the vet is happy to do the injections. On Sunday we see the vet who is monitoring Henry's leg so that's quite a good shout. We will see what she thinks about the situation at that point. On Monday I am seeing the vet exotic specialist whom I've not seen before so hopefully she might be able to give me some guidance and help for a way forward. The vet today reckoned the penicillian would take 24/48 hours to take effect and I am to continue to bath the eye as necessary.
Everything normal now is secondary for me as Henry's welfare MUST take priority in my life - he deserves that from me. The vet is confident - very confident of a complete recovery from the infection and dismissed any thoughts about losing the eye or sight - I was concerned that the matter being removed from the eye would cause secondary infection but she assured me the penicillian would combat this.
So, I've got Henry losing weight, limping and with a tear duct infection. I know you will all say it's not my fault and I'm doing a great job but clearly I'm not. I just hope and pray I get my Henry back.
Henry and Lillian are under the table in the living room as I am off work this morning so they are having extra time with me. The heating is on and trying to get the room cosy and I'm now off to try to get some sleep on the sofa with the duvet, box of tissues to dry my eyes, and some cold remedies.
Thank you all so much again for following and sending your wishes and support. I know in his little heart Henry would say a huge thank you to you all.
Craig xx

Sending hugs and vibes for you and lovely Henry!

I hope the penicillin injections do the trick and that you recover enough for all these vet visits.

Just caught up with this. I really hope you both get better soon and you ARE doing a brilliant job with Henry! :)

You are doing a fantastic job looking after him. Trust us, we know. I hope you both start to feel better soon x

Thank you Henry

My rabbits always 'know' many more people than I do, and are loved and missed more than I ever will be.
They are truly special little creatures and worth more than a million times their weight in gold

I agree whole-heartedly!

Aw you're worth every vibe Henry, really hope you are all well again soon xxx
P.S. Look after your dad too xx

Update on Henry today - saturday. I gace his eye a bathe last night - still some very minor discharge signs - streaky threads across the eye and a few small blobs on his lids. This morning, there would appear to be a significant and noticable improvement in both the eye and Henry's overall demeanour. His eye appears more open, and no evidence as far as I can see (not really close up) of any more white or coloured discharge. His cheek feels warm - obviously due to infection, and the fur is wet from a clear discharge - probably tears , but no real sign of the awful goop I was getting out of the duct. Henry also showed a desire to want to explore again and demanded to go out into the hall and had a wonder through the kitchen and also right up to the living room window.
But it's not all perfect. He holds his paw in a sort of crook way - the paw are is held bent backards towards the rear of his tummy but he occasionally will put the pit down to stabilise - not weight bear. When I've held him, he has the ability to move the leg so there appears to be sensation and voluntary control. He just doesn't seem to chose to weight bear. He moves about on 3 legs not 4. I am assuming there is tenderness at some point that is sufficiently strong enough to dissuade him from putting weight on it. So the paw remains a concern.
He goes to the vets in just under an hour for the second injection for the tear duct but my initial observations are that the penicillian is certainly doing the job. I actually looked at how penicillian worked last night in relation to it's biological mechanisms and it is wonderfully simple but truly fantastic stuff. It breaks down the outer walls of the bacterium and inteferes with the bacteriums ability to generate this 'shell' and stops it assimmilating with cells before the bodys own immune system attacks it via osmosis.
If the injection is as successful as yesterday, then tomorrow should see further improvements when we go back for the 3rd injection and see the vet who we saw with his leg issue. I also hope that with this improvement of sorts, Henry is perhaps beginning to feel better in himself - wanting to explore more and revist the areas he hasn't been to for the last week and a half.
So that's where we are at for now - and your vibes are clearly all helping with the recovery and I am so grateful.
Thank you all - Craig xx

I'm glad that the Penicillin is having a good effect on his infection. I have always found it to be very successful. I hope the next injection goes well at the vets this morning.

Is it perhaps worth asking the vet you will see this morning to give a second opinion on his paw?

Topping up the pot of vibes for him. I hope you are starting to feel a bit better too, Craig.

I am glad he is improving, great news :thumb: I agree with Omi, I would ask the vet today about a 2nd opinion on his paw. Topping up the vibes for Henry and his bundad xx

I am so glad that the penicillin is working for Henry!
It's not always successful, but when it is, it works wonders :)

I hope you managed to get some clarity on the paw too.

And how are you feeling yourself this morning?

Hi everybun - well, the O/H did the vet run this morning and it was the nurse who did the injection under supervision from the vet on duty - the vet we saw last week re his paw and unfortunately they whisked Henry out back whilst they did his injection so O/H didn't get any chance to give feedback on things.
When Henry came back he was very sorry looking and moped about in the corner - so appeared worse than he did first thing. I picked him up and gave him a cuddle and stroked his eye duct and another great shot of goop came flying out all over me with such force. That shocked me a bit and I managed to coerse more runny goop out so the eye isn't looking fab right now, although all this goop coming out must be making some sort of difference. The more I get out, the more chance the penicillian has to work effectively.
She both buns are sitting in their usual under the table spot.
Earlier, before Henry went to the vet, we caught him in a full sploof - back feetsies out AND both front paws. He has NEVER done any straight leggy sploof and certainly not with his bad paw out. I will post photo on RWSA thread later.
Me? I'm rough. I mean like - "I can't be bothered" sort of rough. My nose has exploded, my throat feels like someone stuck a toilet brush down it, my head hurts and I can feel the germs migrating down to my chest. I'm full of guitar and just need to curl up and hibernate for a few days - but I can't do that so making myself busy cleaning out the buns, then I've got some cooking to do and the washing needs to get sorted and then ironed. Then I've got some dusting and cleaning to do and I might grab myself some time later cause I had a very rough night.
So things are sort of even with Henry - we might be making small steps in getting on top of the infection in his ducts but I still feel like I have let him down by not spotting this earlier.
Thank you again for all your support. It means the world to me and Henry.
Craig xx

I've been following, sorry I didn't say yesterday, but I really don't think you've let him down at all :)

Honestly, for what it's worth, I think Henry is just going through it at the moment, just like us humans can, and I don't think it's preventable, and you notice everything quickly because you observe Henry lots because you care so much :)

You're doing an amazing job, and I'm sorry you're ill, it sucks being that ill, I hope you can rest a little today so you can also get better xx

Thanks for up-dating us and sending more "get better" vibes for poor Henry and poor you. MM is always advising the use of Echinacea - have you tried it?
