Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Tilt relapse?

I've become really worried about Teddy over the course of the weekend. He started falling over a little bit and it's just got worse and worse. Sometimes he's just standing still and then he rolls, almost as if someone has pushed him. Once he starts it's like he can't stop for a while, but after a few minutes he's fine again.

I'm trying to comfort him every time I see it. He seems okay in himself, still eating, drinking and pooping. He's on a bit of metacam as he's booked in for a dental on Tuesday, so now I'm panicking as to whether he can have the dental and more importantly why he's started rolling again. I'm going to call the vet first thing in the morning, the earliest I can get him there is tomorrow evening if they need him to come in. Just really baffled and worried now, it seems to have come on really suddenly.

He never had any eye rolling but I do have some anti nausea medication (meclizine?) I used to give him, just wonder if this might help in the meantime? Really don't know what to do.

I don’t have any experience so I can’t advise, but I’m sending lots of vibes xx

Poor Teddy and poor you :( I'm sorry to read this. I'm also sorry that I do not know what to advise, but sending him lots of vibes.

Thank you both. I hope I'm just panicking and overreacting. Obviously he needs to see a vet but I have a tendency to catastrophise sometimes with things (not just bunny related!). Just hope it's not a full on relapse.

I hope that with prompt Veterinary intervention any serious relapse can be averted. IME relapses of vestibular problems can occur so you are wise to get him to the Vet ASAP.

How has he been overnight ?

I've been able to book an appointment for this evening, that was the earliest they could fit him in. He's still falling over at random but not quite as much and it doesn't seem to be bothering him, still eating and drinking etc. He's running around at the moment looking for food [emoji23] I gave him some meclizine last night and this morning and also have some metacam and panacur so I've given him that too. Not sure what I'm expecting but I think it's more out of desperation.

I wish I'd had the CT scan done now a few months back, I decided against it because of cost but in hindsight perhaps it's a false economy. Just struggling a bit financially at the moment and trying to avoid using my credit card, but at the moment I'd do anything to make sure he doesn't have any more relapses!

Whilst a CT scan might give some confirmation of the exact location/extent of his infection it may not have given any additional treatment options as far as medication goes. I am not sure what your thoughts are on Surgery ? If you have already decided that you would not put Teddy through such major surgery (I have made that decision before for one of my Rabbits) then I dont really think that there would be much point in a CT scan. But that is something to discuss with the Vet.

I assume Teddy is not insured ? If not I wonder if your Vet would agree to setting up a payment plan where you pay a fixed amount each week or each month, rather than having to pay for everything up front. Independent Vet Practices are usually more open to this arrangement than those in a large chain of Practices.

I dont think many of us have a bottomless pit of funds, I certainly do not. So it's a harsh reality that the cost of diagnostics etc has to be taken into account unless the Pet is Insured. I really hope that all will go well for Teddy this afternoon xx

Hi there and sorry not to have seen your post last night.

Glad you've managed to arrange a vet appointment for tonight.

You asked about meclizine - some folk have had success giving this to their rolling bunnies.

A CT scan can certainly provide lots of useful info, but if you've got a good vet, I should discuss the pros and cons, give it's so very expensive.

Thank you, I'm going to ask my vet later, he had a mini relapse earlier in the year but it was nowhere near this bad, so although it's expensive it might be best to just do it and find out exactly what's going on.

I always said when he first got ill that I'd be very pragmatic with him and would just take each day as it came, but he's done so well that I just root for him, he's my special boy.

So he's in at the vet now, I took him in last night as I was worried about how much he was falling over. There wasn't much they could do as they didn't want to give him the steroid injection because he needs to have antibiotics and painkillers for his dental. So we agreed to start the antibiotics last night, I took him home and he's gone back in today for them to do the dental. They're also going to do some head x rays to see if there's anything obvious. I discussed a CT as well, and will wait for the results of the x ray before making a decision on that front. The vet wondered whether the dental issues could be linked to this relapse e.g. If he has issues with his very back teeth it could be causing issues within his ear. But at this point who knows!

But for now he just needs dental vibes for today!

The poor fella has got a lot going on hasn't he. I really hope that his Dental goes well and that the Xrays may give the Vet some useful information about onward treatment options. It goes without saying that I'm sending your brave boy lots of vibes

I hope all goes well for your brave soldier today :)

He seems to be in good hands with your vet and I hope you aren't worrying too much x

Thanks all. I was giving him his medication this morning and putting his eye drops in just thinking to myself how tolerant he is of everything and how much he's been through. He's such a happy little chap. I feel bad for him even though this started before I adopted him and there's nothing I could've done to prevent it.

I always feel very bad for my buns when something happens, even though it's not been my fault at all.
I guess it shows just how much we care x

Thank you all for your kind words and support! He is back home now, the dental went well and there are no abnormalities with his teeth.

The x ray showed differences between his left ear and right ear in the little air sac behind his ear drum (I can't remember the name the vet gave it!). In his tilty ear, it looks like there might be either fluid, infection, a mass, or scar tissue inside it. The x ray has been passed on to a specialist to see what they might recommend. He may go for a CT depending on what they say.

I'm glad we've found something as it explains why it keeps coming back. Now it's "just" a matter of finding out what is in the ear. I'm hoping it's just a little pocket of infection that could be treated with alternative medication to everything we've tried so far, but we'll see. He has to go back for a checkup at the weekend so I should get the results then. In the meantime the antibiotics and painkillers that he's on post op for the dental should manage the symptoms.

I hope he recovers quickly from his dental. Fingers crossed that the findings in his ear can be treated easily xx

I'm pleased that Teddy's dental has been done and has gone well. It sounds as though your vet is being very thorough.

Sending him loads of vibes.

I hope he recovers well from his Dental and that the Specialist will get back to your Vet promptly to enable a treatment plan to be put in place. Topping up the vibes for Phillip xx
