  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Using Zantac to treat side effects of Baytril?

Stator

Warren Veteran
Roo has been given Baytril to try and treat a cataract, which may be age related but doesn't look like an age related cataract, so the vet is treating as an infection to see if it responds.

The side effects of the Baytril seem to be some sort of eating discomfort. She is eating all fresh foods fine, and also hay. But not eating pellets. She isn't pressing her belly to the floor or showing any other signs of gut pain.
She is pooing fine.

She has not been prescribed Zantac but I was wondering if it can be used to treat discomfort in the stomach from the baytril which might be causing her to not eat pellets.

We are going back to the vet on Tuesday regarding the eye.

She is also on Metacam and Tramadol for arthritis.

Has the vet not given topical eye drops for the possible infection? I would think that's a first line of treatment rather than systemic Baytril but then I'm not a vet ...

I haven't ever given Zantac alongside Baytril, as it's not been necessary. Some people give Avipro probtiotics, but there's no evidence they do any good.

I have found that Tramadol upset the stomach sometimes though, and I always had to give Zantac before a dose of that.

No eye drops. There's no discharge around the eye or anything, not that I know anything about eye infections.

I will be seeing one of the rabbit vets on Tuesday, although I suspect it's going to be chalked down to age related.

I know of no 'normal' meds that help cataracts.
I usually go and have one visit with an ophthalmologist, despite the cost  and then at least I know what I'm dealing with.

If the vet suspected eye infection then eye drops would have been more suitable, I would have thought.

Good luck with the rabbit vet. I think that's a good idea.
