Hi i am writing in here as i have been to the vets with my baby bella who is 26 weeks old, we noticed she has a few red spots on her eye it doesn't bother her at all but the vet doesnt know what it is so we are going to vet hospital so an eye experts can see her but thought i would try here as it is 200 pound just for the appointment not including treatment. I have attached a picture, hopefully someone on here as seen this. thank you in advance she is my wee baby i have already lost a rabbit this year and i will be heartbroken if it is anything serious but i always think the worst. On the photo it is the red spots just on her iris.

Hi there :)

I'm sorry to hear of your rabbit's eye. Anything wrong with eyes is always worrying.

I am glad however that you are seeing a specialist, and although it's expensive, you will probably only need to go the once. You may even be able to get meds from your own vet if that's cheaper. It's far, far better than your vet sending photos to a specialist and asking their opinion, as an ophthalmologist really knows their stuff and far better than a 'normal' vet.

Red spots is unusual and doesn't bring anything immediately to mind, but you can look here in case it helps:

Do post back as I would want to know how your rabbit got on.
I have used eye specialists many times and rate them highly :)

Hi Everyone

Sorry for the very late reply,

So bella had a parasite in her eye, so she was put on antibiotics to get rid of the parasite but things didn't get better. She got catalyst in her eye then it got worse and now she has glaucoma. So the decision was eye drop the rest of her life which wouldn't stop it from getting worse or eye removal which is she getting tomorrow. She is still a happy wee bunny, still binking about and eating loads (she loves her veg).
The only thing is im so anxious as my last rabbit who went for an operation to get ulcers removed never came home and im anxious of how she will react after. She has her best friend chewie by her side so hoping he will help her.

Has anyone experienced an eye removal in a rabbit before? more concerned about the aftermath

Thank you in advance

xx

Im terribly sorry to read this update for your poor girl. I hope the operation is a success. It is always a dramatic step and I understand your worry and concern. Glaucoma is a complex condition and in soem cases the removal is the only step to prevent further issues. Bella will be in the best hands and she will have Chewie there to support her and make her feel safe. Chewie will provide familiar smells and associations. Obviously, following the op, Bella will lose the binocular vision aspect so Bella will have some degree of issues on her left side because it will be her blind spot. Bella will probably compensate by moving her head more and her hearing will be more acute. But I would try as much as possible to avoid approaching her from the left side as it will startle her.
I know this sounds unrelated, but my father suffers from glaucoma - has done for many years and he had his eye removed 2 years ago now. He struggles with his left side - as I found out to my cost recently when I inadvertantly approached him whilst he was in the kitchen and scared him half to death.
Sending millions of vibes for Bella and hope that you will be able to update us after the op tomorrow. Hugs to you. xx

Hi

Thank you for your kind reply, She is doing good. Eating a bit but she is back to the vets this morning for her post op check up and the vets are very happy how the operation went and how it is healing. She was basically blind in that eye before because of the problem with it. She is getting kept in today at the vets until half 6 just cause she is an nightmare to take her medicines. But still active and loving cuddles.
She doesn't look the prettiest just now but will heal nicely over the next few month.

I am luck i had insurance- the best advice i would give to anyone that has rabbits is get insurance, I pay 13 a month but already done a few claims and my last one was 500 pound for my late rabbit and bellas treatment would of been over 700 pounds but cause of the insurance i paid 55 pound.

Thanks
