Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I brought my first bun home yesterday. The lady I got her from told me beforehand that she needed her teeth trimmed regularly, she said because the rabbit (no name yet) had never been given anything to chew on when she was young by her first family, so she’d never learned to chew her own teeth down. Well, after looking at her teeth myself, I’d say that isn’t the problem. Im no expert but I know enough to know that her teeth should not be going in all those wild directions.

And what’s up with that top tooth?

We only have one rabbit vet anywhere near us, and that’s who she’s been taken to every couple months for the last two years to get her teeth trimmed. When I take her to get spayed I’ll see if he thinks he can do anything more for her teeth, but he’s kinda just a basic small animal vet. I really wouldn’t trust him for anything other than the most routine of operations.

Has anyone else has experience with a rabbit with teeth like this? What did you end up needing to get done?

How heartbreaking. Please take your bunny to your vet tomorrow morning as a matter of urgency as s/he needs dental work now. To get to that state without taking her to a vet must mean she was neglected in her previous home. Maybe with the right care & diet her incisors could be better managed. Your vet should advise.

Please let us know how you get on

She needs to be seen ASAP, that's absolutely heartbreaking :'(

The only vet anywhere near us that sees small animals is closed tomorrow as it’s thanksgiving. I will get her seen ASAP though.

The previous family did take her in to that vet every 8ish weeks to get her teeth trimmed. Obviously they haven’t in a while, which is why she is with me now. I think they got tired of taking care of her. [emoji3525]

I don’t know if he will do anything more for her. We seem to live in the middle of an area that has very little knowledge or compassion for animals other than cats, dogs, horses, and cattle.

Poor bunny  I’ve never seen teeth that have been left to get like that before. I hope you can find a better vet, and soon, she will need to be spayed by someone who is rabbit savvy too.

I agree that she needs to have those teeth sorted urgently.

I’m so glad for her that you have taken her on and are going to take good care of her

I have a rabbit who had teeth like that, his bottom incisors just went too far forward so weren't being worn down by the bite as they should have been. My vet warned me that his teeth would become a problem and so as soon as they did we arranged to have his incisors removed. In theory you shouldn't need a specialist vet for this as it's a fairly routine procedure, I would imagine if they are used to anaesthetising rabbits for spaying and removing teeth from cats/dogs etc then they will be capable of this procedure. I'm pretty sure it can't be done at the same time as spaying as it's considered a 'dirty procedure' ie risk of spreading infection but I could be wrong on that.

Hopefully you will be able to find a vet that can assist. Thank goodness that poor bunny is now in your care, heartbreaking to see her with those teeth.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I will pop into the vet on Monday (the earliest they’ll be open) and talk to them about her teeth.

I may discuss the option of having her incisors removed while she’s being spayed. Then at least she’ll only have to go under GA once.

I'm sorry I haven't seen your message before, but I am so sorry for this bunny.

I work in rescue and have done for the last 25 years, and I have seen this (and worse) many times.
The only remedy is to take the teeth out, and then the bunny does very well :)

I know my vet wouldn't do the spay at the same time as the teeth - just too much for a rabbit to cope with.
The teeth are the emergency xx

Mini update:
I’m getting in touch with the vet today. She’s doing really well. She’s really opened up to us the last couple days and become surprisingly friendly. Her previous family said she was territorial and secluded, rarely personable at all. She’s come right out of her shell here and loves everyone, even my 3yo (supervised visits only [emoji6]). She’s eating really well and I’m keeping an eye on her health wise while we sort her teeth out. I think she’s enjoying finally having plenty of hay and greens.

So overall she’s doing great and we’ll be getting her into the vet ASAP. I’ve gotten mixed information on doing her teeth and her spay at the same time. Some vets say it’s best to do it all once at get it over with and some say it’s too much all at once. I guess I’ll see what mine says today. Either way, she’ll be sorted out soon. [emoji846]

Not great news. I’m learning I don’t have ANY vets ANYWHERE near me that remove incisors. I have an appointment set for her to be spayed and have her incisors trimmed. But it’s not looking like removal will be an option.

Gosh, I'm sorry that's a shame :( I hope her spay goes well. Perhaps the vet will have some other options for her incisors.

That’s unfortunate:cry: does the vet have anyone he can refer you to for having it done?
