Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

RU suggestions!

Hi so I have a 2 year old spayed mini lop who has a curve in her spine. (I’ll attach the X-ray I took)

Basically she’s had a flare up this week and is back on meloxicam and today we started a gabapentin trial but I was just wondering any practical things I can do to help. So far I have a low litter tray and use ramps up to her castle, as she’s only 2 so wants to explore!

As well as the meds has the Vet suggested regular physio and acupuncture/laser therapy ? All three can be very beneficial for Rabbits with certain types of spinal problems.

With regards to her accommodation I would suggest keeping her on a surface with good traction and minimum abrasive effects. Good traction will help her 'hopability' and reduce the risk of her slipping when/if she charges about. Wood/lino/tile etc flooring is unlikely to provide much traction. A low abrasive surface will reduce the risk of her developing pododermatitis as a secondary issue to her spinal deformity. Thick rubber matting used in stables for horses is one option. I'd avoid carpet completely.

Have you thought of her having acupuncture or cold laser therapy?
My vet does these and they can be very effective:

Thank you everyone! Acupuncture is something I’d thought about. So far gabapentin has helped in the last 24hrs as she’s managed to clean her bottom! I’m glad to hear others have found acupuncture to be beneficial and certainly something I’ll be looking into :)
