  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Flystrike warning

bunny babe

Wise Old Thumper
Just wanted to remind everyone to be vigilant with the warmer weather we are still having.

I found some tiny moving eggs on Cassie last night and after trimming her, combing her, picking anything off and then rear guarding her she appears OK so far but obviously will be checking vigorously.

She is a higher risk bunny as she is incontinent intermittently.

Oh no, I really hope she will be OK xx

Is Cassie an outside bunny?

I hope she's OK - I don't use rearguard so I check regularly

She is an outside bunny, however when I say "outside", they have a 12 x 6 dog chalet. All mesh is covered with fly screen. They do free range when we are in.

I do not usually use rearguard as a routine but have it in for emergency (thank goodness).

I am currently looking as some of the other things such as Beaphar to have in the first aid kit but will be getting a re-stock of rearguard anyway and do Rambo as a precaution before I put them together again.

I remember many years ago a Rescue Centre I worked with had something you applied to a rabbit that was very safe. We never had any cases of fly strike when using it, but maybe that was luck?

I find it so difficult to know what to do for the best. Protecting, but then keeping away from chemicals as much as possible.

Thank you Jayne, that looks like it does both. Reading Beaphar ones it was either preventitive or treatment whereas that one looks like it does both.

I have actually had to take Cassie to the vets today as she is not eating at all (not fly strike related) but her urine was very strong smelling this morning so we have different abx, gut stimulants and vetergesic and continue with metacam.

i am so paranoid about cats & squirrels yet flies are the clear & present danger here.

i have fly screens on the entarnce to their shed but i can't do much about outside. wish i could. i f****** hate them for what they do with rabbits.
