Always Worried About Plumpkin - Update

It must be very reassuring that she likes the smoothies so much. At least you can be sure what food intake she is having and that it is nutritious.

Giving Penicillin injections to a rabbit is daunting, but I've done it for a few of my rabbits and you do get very used to it. I actually find it a lot less bother and a lot less stressful all round than trying to syringe liquid medication. And importantly it can be extremely effective. The only concern is that you must make sure that, if any drips on the rabbit's fur, you wipe it off immediately as they must not ingest it. I never found that to be a problem though.

Thank you so much guys <3

Just a little update - she is enjoying the smoothie bowls more and more and is literally licking the bowl clean. Here's a picture of her tucking in to brekky this morning:

I went to the vet earlier today so Bea and Ham could have their Myx and VHD1 vaccinations. Had a long chat with my vet (by luck we saw the vet I believe is the most savvy and that I have the most confidence in) - I brought up going to a specialist and he said he knows Highcroft in Bristol is meant to be amazing for rabbits, but that he isn't sure they'd be able to do more than the surgery here are already doing.

He thought the smoothies were a great idea and he also mentioned in the past he has prescribed penicillin injections every 2 days to rabbits with abscesses if it's a recurring problem, but that you have to be really careful because it's poisonous to them if ingested through the mouth.

I went in with a lot of positivity, because I HAVE to stay positive for Plumpkin's sake and my own sanity, but he very much views her health improving as a lost cause :/

I think all I can do is continue to feed her three times a day and monitor her frequently. We are also making great progress with their winter shed and should have it up in a couple of weeks. I am literally doing everything within my power that I can for her. Hopefully it will be enough!

As you know, I've looked after dozens of rabbits with abscesses, and given more penicillin injections that I can count! I am a full supporter of penicillin injected for abscesses and have found that very often the abscess doesn't recur when given for a long enough period.

A bottle of penicillin is dirt cheap and you soon get used to doing the injections. Yes, they shouldn't ingest it, but making sure the fur is clean after injecting is all you have to do.

I hope u can consider trying the penecillian injections, u had great results on my 3 buns who a had abseses - 2 ear one tooth root. Yes nerve racking at the start but you get better each time. Just wipe the injection site with dry and then wet tissue and it will be ok and give a rasin or banana to them ad a reward for being so brave . Your love and care for Plumpkin shines through xx

Thanks so much you guys. Just thought I'd update to say that we took Plumps to the vet today for a checkup, and she's gained 250 grams in 2 weeks! I'm so proud of her! Abscess is healing nicely too. My smoothies must be working
