Always Worried About Plumpkin - Update

Thank you everyone for your support. It has been a really hard time but I hope by taking this step I can get some answers. I have been looking on the RWAF website, and there is a vet called Sonya Miles in Bristol at 'Highcroft Vet Group' who has been given a gold bunny rating by the RWAF. It takes 40 minutes for me to get to Bristol on the train so I could potentially call them up and have a chat.

When arranging to meet a specialist or set up something with a different practice like this, how do I go about it? To be candid, Plumpkin has cost us almost £1000 since March, so I don't want to drag her to another city only to find that it was a waste of stressing her out and a waste of money. If I go out of my way to take her to someone new, I want to make sure they know what they're doing with rabbits. I assume the RWAF is very reliable with their recommendations?

Her next GA is booked in for mid November and I would like her to see a specialist before then.

Yes, a Gold rating from the RWAF is a very reliable endorsement. I would call Highcroft up and explain your situation. If you made an appointment to take Bea there then they would need to contact your current Vet to obtain Bea's clinical records. Personally I would inform your current Vet about your intention of seeking another opinion, but you are not obliged to tell them. I just feel it would be courteous to do so.

I was going to say pretty much the same. Alternatively call your vet, explain you'd like to see a specialist & ask who they refer too

Unless the practice is specifically a referral practice, then you can just make your own appointment to go there. They will need Plumpkin's notes, but the new vet you go and see usually request these.

I would ring and speak with the actual specialist you would be seeing, and make sure they are aware of the possible issues and make sure that they are happy to take them on at that particular time. They can then make their own arrangements to gather the notes from your vet to save you having to speak with your own vet about it. Vets are used to this kind of thing and they don't worry about you getting a second opinion over something so serious.

I agree with what has ben posted above, Beapig. I understand how you feel. The energy you have put in to rescuing this beautiful rabbit is huge and you are doing all you can.
I think that seeking a more specialised vet is a good way forward and I've been trying to think on what is a good way forward with this - regarding your concerns about taking Plumpkin all the way to potentially a new vets and the stress involved. And touching on what MM said above, a phone call to the specialist is going to provide a better insight into what they know and what they can offer you before you consider the journey. Another varient on that could be to ask if your current vet could also have a chat to the specialist. Your vet would know the detailed history of Plumpkin and it is in everyones interests to get the best possible outcome for the wellbeing and welfare of Plumpkin. I genuinely hope that you are able to find the specialist and can get Plumpkin comfortable and hopefully find a plan forward with her. Sending you hugs xx

Thank you so much everyone for the advice. I have emailed the specialist's vet (I feel I am much more eloquent by email than by phone) - hopefully I will hear back today. In the meantime, I am going to the vet at 10.00 because this morning one of Plumpkin's cheeks is extremely swollen. I expect an abcess from the dental. The pain never ends for this poor girl :(

I am always here if you need a shoulder.

You are coping tremendously well with this (as is P) but I know this is relentless and difficult x

Thank you MM. She is going to have the abcess drained, so going under anaesthetic again. Feeling very emotional, but proud of myself that I spotted it straight away. Poor poor girl :(

Oh dear, I am sorry to hear this  Sending lots more vibes for her x

((((( hugs )))))

With fluffy cheeks it's often easy to miss abscesses/swellings so yes, I agree, you were very on the ball to spot that one.

Sending lots of vibes that Plumpkin recovers from the GA well and that the abscess clears up. Also sending you vibes to keep up your strength.

I actually find the specialists cheaper as they get to the issue quicker as opposed to a un savvy vet. I would trust the rwaf gold system - our vet is John Chitty who is gold too.

Sending lots of vibes and plumpkin is very lucky to have you as a owner xx

This.

Altho! I don't think my vet is on the rwaf thing, which is weird really... He should be...

Sending masses of vibes for beautiful Plumpkin and a hug for you because you need one. Superb work spotting the access and getting it sorted so quick. Plumpkin really is blessed to have you as her guardian angel and giving her that strength and health that she so deserves. You are a real heroine and rabbit saviour Beapig.
