  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit toe nail bed inflammation

New Kit
Hi, i purchased my baby bunny yesterday from a store. I prefer to adopt, like i did with my 2 netherland dwarfs, however no convincing would get my sister to leave this bunny we met at Jolleys. I didn't want to stress her out so i left her in the carry case until we got home. When we got her home i gave her a little look over and immediately noticed a swelled dry/crusty nail bed. I would prefer not to go to the vet as she is very young and easily frightened + unless its a rabbit specialist, i do not want the bunny to be some sort of "experiment". However if everyone believes thats the best option i will obviously do so. Just basically wondering what may have caused it and if theres a cream that may help or something like that.

She may have caught it and caused it to bleed, my bun did this when I adopted him, can you get any photos without stressing her much? Has she had her vaccinations yet? If not then you could always get them done and her checked at same time

i will try, i have bought some antiseptic cream and have monitored it throughout the day but it doesnt look any better and in my opinion it seems to be getting worse, ill try to upload a photo now

I think it would be a good idea to get the Rabbit seen by a Vet today, especially as you say that the problem is getting worse. The toe nail bed may be infected and this would need treatment. You could post photos on here, but no-one is qualified to give treatment advice, only the Vet can do that.

The Rabbit will also need vaccinations

And neutering, if not already neutered.

So a Vet appointment would enable you to arrange these important procedures as well as getting Bunny's sore toe examined and treated.

Finally, some info re posting photos here :

Hi there and welcome to the Forum

As minilop says, when you take her for her vaccinations - hopefully very soon - then the vet can take a look at it. Best to go sooner rather than later just in case it gets infected.

Ive arranged an appointment for tomorrow at the vets. Im honestly beginning to think that Peppa's toe is broken or something like that as the whole toe is red. Thank you for the advice and ill try to upload a few of the photos to ask your opinions until the appointment tomorrow.
