Hay suppliers - quality and quantity advice

MaxAndMolly

Young Bun
Can anyone offer any advice on hay suppliers for the new bunnies? (One year olds from a rescue centre). They like their hay much more than Max and Molly ever did!

We’re considering these two suppliers:
https://www.timothyhay.co.uk/products/2016-20kg-of-timothy-hay
... 18kg at £40 seemed reasonable(ish)

Or:
https://www.colehay.co.uk/product/individual-bale-timothy-hay/
... £17.50 for a bale sounds good. But I don’t know how a standard sized bale of hay compares weight or bulk wise with the 18kg for £40 listing from Timothy Hay.

Does anyone have any views on whether one of these is significantly better than the other, in terms of either quality or value for money?

Timothyhay.co.uk 100%. I've never used the other one but I haven't met a rabbit that doesn't love timothy hay

Another vote for the timothyhay.co.uk hay here :thumb: We have been using it for a long time now and have never had a bad batch. I have never tried your listed alternative and looked at their website carefully, as it is sometimes good I think to occasionally feed the rabbits with different hay. From the pictures I would say their timothy hay looks good, but it is certainly not as green as what we buy. Also, I might be wrong but it looks to me as though you either need to collect the bale from their premises in Devon, or have it delivered by the pallet, which is 40 bales.

Hay bales from a local equine supplier is usually the cheapest way to get hay at about £6 a bale. The bales can vary a bit, but are fine for rabbits and offer more variety of grasses and other dried plants (eg clover). Sometimes they surprise me in their preferences as it's not always the ones that I would pick out that they prefer to eat.

Thank you everyone. I looked again at Colehay. Although they don’t list the weight of an ‘individual bale’ of their Timothy hay, I saw their individual bales of straw are listed as 10Kg. Assuming the hay is roughly the same weight, and adding on the £7.50 delivery charge, their prices look less attractive than the timothyhay.co.uk 18Kg box. So given the glowing reviews, I’ll try that next. If anyone else is passing and has experience of Colehay and wants to level the playing field, or if anyone wants to recommend another supplier, please do. We’ll keep monitoring this thread.

Thanks again.
