Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Worried about rabbit sulfatrim dosage

Hi everyone, my bunny boy Patch has a chest infection, he has been on baytril for the past two weeks, but our vet has switched him over to Sulfatrim. The dosage she has given for patch is 3mls, every 12 hours. It seems like a lot and I was just concerned, I worry about him being overdosed. He's still eating and pretty cheeky, just a bit more tired and relaxed tonight. He's 9years old, and he still has a lot to give I feel. He has two brothers also.
I've had a look at dosage charts but I cant understand them at all

Hi christina, I hope you're well

Sorry to hear about Patch.

You might find this thread interesting - Sulfatrim is the same as Septrin and Trimethoprim Sulfa.

It all depends on the his weight, but the thread above might give you some idea of whether it's reasonable.

Also, ring the vet surgery and get them to double check x

Hi Jack's Jane and MightyMax :) Thank you for your replies.

Ah, Jack's Jane that is the medicine and our vet has said 3mls twice a day. I'm now worried that is too high a dose :( He's only 1.5kg.

He is eating pretty well today, and I'm pretty sure we are on the right track with him, touch wood :) He seems to love all the fuss he is receiving lol. He sits on our laps for 1-3 hours every night, with a facial sauna near us, and with his bowl of pellets next to us, which he nibbles from now and then lol.

Have you contacted the Vet again to speak with him/her to confirm that it is 3mls and not 0.3ml ?

There are other formulations containing the same active ingredients but at different strengths . It really would be best to contact the Vet

You're welcome christina :)

I'm glad he's doing so well! Did you check the dosage with your vet?
