  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi!

I took my rabbit to the vet because it sounds like he has breathing problems while eating and has runny eyes. The vet took a bacterial test and it showed the bacteria pseudomonas. Iḿ curently treating him with antibiotics but the problem is that my female met with him a month ago and had babies now. Do you think the female and her babies also have the bacteria? (Accidental breeding) Do any of you here have experience with this bacteria and is it highly contagious? The rabbits are in cages next to eachother with just wire between.

Hi Idun and welcome to the Forum

I am sorry to hear about your buck.

As stated in this article, if your other rabbits are healthy there should be no danger to them:

Transmission
Transmission is unlikely between animals. Colonization of animals is most commonly due to exposure to water containingP.aeruginosa

Some info on antibiotics and their uses in rabbits:

I have one bun with pseudomonas in a trio. The others have not been affected. You may find nebulising daily and adding a sprinkle of bisolven to the diet may help along with the antibiotics.
