  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbits ear torn after a fight yesterday, will it heal or do I need to see the vet

Hi my two rabbits had a fight yesterday which were once bonded. The centre of the ear is torn towards the top about half an inch. Will it heal up or is this a trip to the vet as I can see through it.

thanks,

i would put a photo on but dont know how to do it

Hi, sorry to hear your rabbits have fought, that's a shame. It might be worth a trip to the vet purely so it can be properly cleaned, pain relief can be given, and the vet can have a proper look to see if any dead skin needs trimming away so that it can heal properly on its own without it becoming infected - antibiotics may also be required.

But I'm only guessing here - I'm neither a vet nor vet nurse, but didn't want to read and run. But I think if that happened to one of my girls I'd pop them to the vet, especially as it's an ear which is quite a delicate area. It also depends on where you live and what the flies are like at the moment as they would have a field day on an open wound if it's the summer time where you are.

Thanks for your reply Angie, we are going to the vet this afternoon. I've bathed the ear and given a little bit of pain relief he had used before.

Excellent idea :). Remember to tell the vet what dose you gave and when, as they'll need to know.
