There are three viruses which Rabbits are at risk of contracting, Myxomatosis, Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease 1 (RHD1) and Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease 2 (RHD2)

VACCINATIONS are the only way to insure that Rabbits have optimum protection against these lethal diseases.

The Vaccines licensed for use within the UK are :

Nobivac Myxo-RHD, this covers both Myxomatosis and RHD1. Full information about this vaccine can be found here :

Nobivac Myxo-RHD does NOT give protection against RHD2, for this to be achieved a separate vaccination is required. Most Vets are using Filavac.

The cost of each Vaccination may vary as Vets set their own Fees. Many Surgeries offer a Pet Care Plan which is an annual subscription and covers vaccinations amongst many other benefits.

Some people may decide to shop around other Veterinary Surgeries to find the best price for vaccinations. This is of course entirely up to the individual, but personally I prefer continuity of care from a Vet who has full clinical information about my Rabbit's medical history and previous vaccination status.

The most important thing it that your Rabbit(s) is/are vaccinated and that boosters are given at appropriate times.




UPDATE ABOUT ERAVAC

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) have now published an amended Summary of Product Characteristics (SPC) for Eravac which cites duration of immunity (DOI) as 12 months.

I have just spoken with MSD Animal Health and I have been informed that the new triple vaccine covering Myxomatosis, RHD1 and RHD2 (Nobivac Myxo-RHD Plus) will be available for Vets to order at the beginning of May, ie Friday of this week

Whether this means that the single dose RHD2 Vaccines, Filavac and Eravac and the Nobivac-RHD(1) will eventually be withdrawn I do not know.

Latest update- My Vet has told me that the original Nobivac Myxo-RHD Vaccine will be withdrawn from sale in the not too distant future, so only the Nobivac Myxo RHD Plus will be available. There is a specific protocol for Vets to follow when switching from Vaccinating Rabbits with Nobivac Myxo-RHD and Filavac/Eravac.

So I'd advise people to contact their own Vet to discuss switching to the Nobivac Myxo-RHD Plus vaccine as once the Nobivac Myxo RHD is withdrawn there will be no other Myxomatosis vaccine available apart from Nobivac Myxo-RHD Plus .
