Walking in area with Myxi Infected Wild Rabbits - Precautions?

Went on a 'lovely' walk with my partner today, spotted a number of beautiful looking bunnies, however my heart sunk as we got closer and closer to them without them even noticing us. Got within a few inches of one before it noticed us and I noticed its swollen, pussy eyes. I am 80% sure this is myxi.
What precautions can I take to ensure this isnt spread to my rabbit? The warren is miles away and my bun lives indoors, so should i just wash all of our clothes and shoes? Is a normal wash okay or should I use dettol or similar?
We were on the bike so I cant put all of our leathers in the washing machine? How far should I go? This has naturally scared me a bit and am inches away from forcing my partner and I to bathe in bleach and sleep in the out house for several days!!
A fast response would be much appreciated as its nearing feeding time. I have currently changed all my clothes at the door and washed my hands and arms with carex.

Neither of us came in direct contact with the rabbit or touched any, we were just laying on the grass where they had been running and grazing, etc.

Please help! He has only had his viral vaccines so far as I couldn't have them all in one go!

hi :)

unfortunately the only way to really protect is vaccinations. there is no other "method" so to speak, outdoor or indoor all rabbits are at risk. but I do understand they can be costly.

I would suggest any clothes you were wearing to be stripped down outside/away from rabbit and immediately put in the wash, along with both of you showering. its more of a precaution thing than anything else. Myxi is not like the RHD (which is airborne) but is spread through direct rabbit contact, and biting insects which you could have carried home, but unlikely. still, I wouldn't feel comfortable having said clothes near rabbit as an "in case"

Myxomatosis is caused by the myxoma virus, a poxvirus spread between rabbits by close contact and biting insects such as fleas and mosquitoes. The virus causes swelling and discharge from the eyes, nose and anogenital region of infected rabbits.

I'm not sure what you mean by viral vaccines.. there are 3 diseases, myxi, RHD1 & RHD2. nobivac covers myxi & RHD1, filivac covers RHD1 & RHD2 if I'm not mistaken. but I'm a bit tired so things pass me by lol

That wasn't clear was it! Also tired and a bit stressed, what I meant was he had the RHD vaccine (I believe the filivac) recently and had to wait a little bit until he had the myxi one. Typical I was going to book him in tomorrow...

All clothes have been washed and dettol'ed. Motorcycle gear has been wiped down and shaken, highly unlikely a biting insect would have made it home on a sportsbike but have made sure! Everything now stinks of disinfectant and since the risk of us transporting insects home is seriously low and now everything has been cleaned/put in the washing machine (Unable to wash motorcycle leathers so have wiped them with dettol) I think we are all okay.

So sad to see such a beautiful warren ruined by such a horrible disease!

The main transmission Vector of Myxo are blood sucking insects eg fleas/mosquitoes. As an additional precaution you could treat your Rabbit with Advantage Flea Treatment, but check with your Vet first

There's an excellent disinfectant - Anigene:

https://www.viovet.co.uk/Anigene-HLD4V-High-Level-Disinfectant-Cleaner/c19401/

You can use it to disinfect virtually everything, even washing clothes with it

Does this kill viruses then?

Here's the spec from the Data sheet tonibun

Info about it here:

Biosecurity

Good husbandry is paramount and sick rabbits should be barrier nursed. Enhanced cleaning, disinfection and quarantine protocols can be implemented in practice and with owners. Anigene HLD4V is a veterinary grade product that is believed to be effective against RVHD when used at a concentration of 1:50 for soiled conditions.

90% of any disinfection is cleaning, that is the most important aspect. After thorough cleaning of the area to remove any scale or residue, use Ark-Klens , which is a benzalkonium chloride disinfectant and as such it should be effective against EC and myxi, to routinely disinfect the housing. Periodically use Virkon (as an inorganic peroxygen compound) to kill any other viruses.

Anigene HLD4V has been confirmed as effective against RVHD2 at a dilution of 1:50. It is important that the correct dilution is used.

Note: Other benzalkonium chloride disinfectants and inorganic peroxygen compounds may be available, in addition to those named above.
