  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Probable kidney tumour

Hello, I took my 9 year old lionhead lop Sky to the vet today as she had peed on the floor and had a wet back end. The vet said she could feel a lump on her kidney which is likely to be cancer and there would be no treatment. She did a scan but said it wasn't that clear however she could see abnormality on it. Has anyone else experienced this please? I don't know if there is anything I can do - she is eating well and generally seems in good health otherwise. I don't know how long I might have left with her or how her sister will cope without her.

I'm so sorry your bun is unwell. I don't have any experience, but I think I would want a second opinion, maybe a more detailed scan and some sort of care plan going forward x

Sorry no experience either, but didn't want to read and run. I hope it all goes ok for your bunny x

Did the Vet suggest running a blood profile to check her kidney function. There are many conditions that can cause a 'mass' on the kidney and not all are cancer. Some conditions can be treated/managed medically. In some cases surgery is an option. Try not to loose all hope until you have more facts.

Thank you so much for these links. The rabbit specialist vet is going to see her next week as he says it is possible this is due to e cuniculi so I have started her on panacur & need to try to get a urine sample but I don't think that will be easy. She seems depressed so I am not holding out much hope.

I had a rabbit with an ovarian tumour that grew around and destroyed one of her kidneys. The vet removed the tumours and the kidney and she lived a long happy life, cancer free and with one kidney. I hope everything works out!
