Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

9 month old Phillip was diagnosed by the vet with stasis on Monday, after not being his usual self on Sunday then stopping eating Monday morning. He’s been on Metacam, gut meds and gas drops since.

The picture was taken in his cage and is how he is spending much of his time at the moment since Monday, not eating and looking pretty lifeless, even though the cage door is open and he has free reign of the house. Yesterday evening he binkied and ate a bit, so I thought he was improving but then today it’s back to this. He gets up to nibble on hay occasionally then it’s back to lying down or sitting up grinding his teeth so something is obviously bothering him. He’s also grooming himself a lot.

It was only a few weeks ago that he had X-rays, blood tests etc for an ongoing UTI (which has currently cleared up) so I don’t think there is anything underlying 😕. I spoke to the vet today who has put him on a course of baytril as well. The vet found no blockage so I am syringe feeding him alongside. He’s going to the toilet a little but nowhere near like normal. I'm trying to tummy massage him but he's not a strokey rabbit at the best of times and is currently grunting at me when I go near his stomach.

Our other bunny is a stasis bunny so I’m usually pretty confident in knowing the signs and treating it but with Phillip I’m finding it very hard as he just looks so deflated. Please send him good thoughts :(

My pip looks like that when she has gas, We found metacam helped and keeping her warm. Has the vet suggested getting him moving?

When Archie has gas We get him to hop up and down the stairs. I think it gets things moving again.

Vibes for me Archie and Pip

Sending lots of vibes for Phillip. I hope he starts to feel better soon. I presume the vet has ruled out a dental problem?

Hi there

Sending loads of good vibes for Phillip. It's so difficult with stasis as we often never discern the actual cause, but treat the symptoms. Is he moulting at all? You say he's on a course of Baytril - is that for the UTI or has he already had a course of abx for that? Poor little one. How does he enjoy his critical care? I often use that, or mashed up pellets, mixed in with baby food (organic, Ella's Kitchen) to enhance the taste and try and stimulate appetite.

I also use Infacol alongside meds, as it often helps to release the gas. It certainly can do no harm.

Dental issues can sometimes go undetected, as a vet can't see to the back of the cheek teeth unless they are able to do 'conscious dentals'. I'm sorry, I know you didn't ask for advice, so I hope you don't mind me putting my thoughts down. You probably know more than I do!

Lastly though, have you seen these, just in case they give any tips

She hasn't, no, but I've been trying to gently chase him around the house anyway without making him too angry :)

Thank you, yes she checked his teeth on Monday and he also recently had them checked under X-ray as part of his allergy investigation.
He's been through a lot in his little life, bless him.

If you have stairs. Try them. It gets their butt higher on the way down. Works a treat.

Yeah I get thumped at when I do it, but it definitely helps

Yes he is moulting, he started his first proper adult moult last month and is still going despite regular brushing!
He's previously had antibiotics for his UTIs, but the course started today was because the vet said something about stasis causing bacteria problems or something...I can't remember exactly. I'm using infacol/gripe water.

He tolerates the critical care, I've learned that he takes it better from a smaller syringe, but by no means does he enjoy it! Baby food is a good tip, he loves sweet things, so will pop and get some of that in the morning, thank you.

That's ok - I appreciate any help! He did have his teeth checked under X-ray not long ago as part of his allergy investigation so I don't think it is that.

Thanks for the links, I'll have a read through of those in a minute.

I'll just go and try that now!! Imagine there will be lots of stomps too

Let me know how it goes. Archie gets gas when he has a heavy moult even though he eats loads of hay.

No stomping but he has mustered the energy to run upstairs and cause havoc in the spare room! Hoping he keeps improving :)

Oh that sounds good. Keep bouncing up the stairs... havoc normally means a happier bun. We just had to stop Archie from licking the door. M
Hahaha

Ok you tube there are some fab bunny tummy massage videos. The vet said no blockage so give them a try. It bought my bunny out of GI twice . Sending best wishes

Poor Phillip  If there has been no improvement at all today then personally I would contact the Vet again to request that Phillip is re-assessed. It sounds as though he may need some additional pain relief, sometimes metacam alone is not enough.

I assume that the Xray ruled out any issues relating to bladder stones/sludge and that his blood tests were all OK ?

Fluid therapy (fluids given IV or subcutaneously) are very beneficial in cases of gut stasis. These links may be useful to take a look at

Given Phillips history of Urinary Tract problems you may also want to take a look at these links too
