  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Urgent over grooming wounds

Can anyone suggest something to help with bunny overgrooming and causing bleeding?

Myxi bun has been constantly licking at her swollen genitals and the skin is cracking and bleeding. I am bathing everything frequently but that encourages her to groom more. I can't put any kind of collar on that might prevent eating because if she can't eat by herself she's not going to survive myxi.

She is on pain meds and otherwise improving and happy.

rabbit medical shirt? I don't know where you'd get one at this time of night though. perhaps an out of hours vet has one spare? I'm not sure :( https://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/Medical-Pet-Shirt-Rabbit-Green/productinfo/MEDPETSR/

or an inflatable ring like this, she can still eat but not groom. I don't know how much of a good idea it is https://www.amazon.co.uk/Emwel-Infl...id=1533838188&sr=8-3&keywords=inflatable+cone

I wouldn't advise a lampshade cone unless under extreme circumstances, it gives them too much stress and they can't eat as you said.

Problem with t-shirt or anything covering her genitals is she'll be peeing in it and then it'll burn the skin, I have to work several hours a day so I can't be here all the time and I highly doubt there's an inflatable collar to fit a 5 - 6 week old. It's a very tricky situation, I'm really not sure what will work. She just needs to leave it alone for a few days so it can heal up.

I agree with binkycodie, the rabbit medical shirt would probably be your best bet. I can't imagine where you would get one this evening though either. An out of hours vet would certainly be worth a ring. Other than that they stock them in Amazon, but the soonest you could get one delivered would be Saturday (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rabbit-Pet-Shirt-Small-Green/dp/B00AUC9D5Q). Another option might be an all-in-one baby suit, without sleeves and arms, but it will possibly be too large even in the smallest size (I think your rabbit is very young?).

I think otherwise is a medical vest won't do, a cone wouldn't work, you best bet is to call your vet again and see what they can advise. there aren't really any other options in all honesty, or not that I can think of. really stupid but - why is she licking it so much? I've always been taught if you can try and get a rabbit to be as comfortable as possible, they will leave their wounds alone, but that is in the case of neutering/spaying. I haven't been following however so I don't know exactly what is happening.

either way, would be best to talk to your vet again in this case so they can brainstorm and see what will work.

long shot in the dark but maybe nappies and a medical vest would work, so the urine is soaked up. I'm not sure.
