Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Light wheezing

Hi all, so Aesop is a very happy healthy rabbit, eating and pooping as normal, no adverse signs of illness of anything, however when i press my ear right against his side/ribs i cant hear this very faint wheezing sound. Its only audible if i do this, so it really very quiet. I have asthma and it sounds like me when i breath in dust or have hayfever. This has been happening for a while and i was wondering whether this was perhaps an allergy as he has recently moved room and hasnt been as free range as usual due to various diy things happening in the house.
As i am writing this however he just did a little sneeze/cough sound as he was eating so perhaps i am wrong?
Going to try and make a vet appointment this week but any advice in the meantime as we live in a very rural area with no rabbit specialist vet for 60+ miles.

Edit: after a more prolonged listen the wheezing isnt continuous, it comes and goes, there isnt and nasal discharge.

Being able to hear a true wheeze just by placing your ear against the Rabbit's chest is not 'normal' so it is definitely essential that you get a Vet to have a good listen to Aesop's lungs. Wheezing and 'dry' sneezing can be indicative of a lower respiratory tract infection which always requires very prompt treatment.

Yes, allergies are also a possibility. But only a full examination by a Vet will make it possible to ascertain the exact cause of Aesop's symptoms. My advice would be to try to get a Vet appointment tomorrow at the latest. Especially given that it will then be the weekend. Out of hours emergency appointments, should they be needed, can be very costly.

In the meantime I'd try to minimise dust in the environment and keep a close eye on Aesop's eating and pooing. Should either reduce and/or should the respiratory symptoms worsen then a Vet appointment today would be necessary.

Good luck :)

Hi there and welcome to the Forum

It's best if a savvy vet examines Aesop, as it's so difficult to know exactly what's going on. Certainly quite a few rabbits can suffer with allergies- does his litter tray have wood shavings, for example?

Does he do it at certain times of day?

A vet would be able to sound his chest and see if there's any Respiratory distress, or if it's all in the nose.
I've found the info here to be very useful:

I hope your vet can help you with a diagnosis of what's going on
